Title: 1957 Ford parts liquidation
Post by: gasman826 on 2012-03-02 12:07
I want to 'down size' and get ready to move to smaller digs.  Bunches of used '57 Ford stuff mostly Custom.  Used body parts...none perfect.  No Y block stuff.  Some FE.  Lots of 385 (429/460).  One set of Granada spindle/disc brakes.  Tell me what you want...I'll dig it out and take pictures.

I'd sure like to grab that frame, just wouldn't be cost effective to haul it all the way to the west coast. Even if it was a freebie. Its the one item on my Portland Swap Meet dream list.

Ya', they ususally don't take frames to the swaps.  They are a little heavy and take up a lot of room.

You're absolutely right, but there will be guys there with everything but the frame and that should easily lead me to one.

Do you have any interior stuff, like a rear seat for a Custom Tudor?  Usable door panels?  man, I'd sure like to have both of those quarters just to keep, but it would cost a ton to ship them to Mississippi.  Heck, prob cost that much to ship a seat if you have one.  Have you ever used Greyhound to ship big stuff like that?  Some of the guys on here swear by it.  I do believe that if I still lived in Tennessee, I'd just make the road trip and get a lot of stuff, lol.  Good stash of `57 stuff you got there.

By the way, how much for the shirt in XL?

Good eye.  Yes, there are front and rear (Custom) rechomed bumpers laying there.  They were done at a local chrome shop.  Custom,  I welded studs in the holes so there are no bumper bolts.

There are both rear cushions for a Custom Tudor.  Good condition...recovered in dark, dark gray vinyl tuck and roll.

Greyhound.  I've heard the same.  Just never had an opportunity to use them but I'm willing to try.

T-shirts...These are leftovers of some I had made.  Any color as long as it is grey.  Any size as long as it XXL.  $16 + $3 for shipping to Continental US

I am interested in the right headlight mounting panel you listed yesterday. I would like a complete fender, looks like  have one but that might be a challenge to send to south texas. I would appreciate a photo and price on the panel if it is still available.. Thanks

There are three front fenders there.  They need work.  Shipping a fender to Texas might mean that it would need more work by the time it got there.  If interested, I'll confirm condition and take pictures.  But,  Texas...aren't there rust free parts just sitting around everywhere.  Sorry, I'm from Michigan and we all think that!!!!!

Give me your ZIP and I'll quote shipping on the headlight panel.

Take care,
Gary

I have purchased 3 57 fairlanes and all  three combined I still can't put one together due to rust. They're all Texas cars. This far south and just 75 miles off the coast it's humid. My zip is 78573. I have spent so much time on the right fender and the headlight panel and am pretty close to having it pieced back together. When I saw you had a nice panel I am thinking do I scrap all that work and have a better part or do finish what I started. 300.00 plus shipping will be a lot but when you factor in all of the labor and the quality of the repair one has to make a decision.

I have used Greyhound to both ship and recieve parts.  All were moved relatively fast and the incoming stuff was quick too.  Rear floor pans for my 60 wagon were 45 from AZ, the spare tire well from MT was 55.  Cost me 35 to shipp both halves of a 37 Chevy hood to NJ.

The last time I tried to ship some artwork greyhound, they told us they would only do heavy and big stuff if it could get to it's destination without being changing buses.
Gary...how much for the front bumper..LOL..I'm broke, but maybe my wife's got some she could lend me.

PM me with a price on the seat, shipped to Gulfport, MS.  There is a Greyhound terminal here in town, they do participate in the package program.  I am interested in the back seat, that is the last big thing I really need.  Thanks.

From the pros and cons of shipping Greyhound, the lose/damage risk sounds little different than UPS, USPS, and better than freight.  Has anyone used uship.com.  I think it is associated with eBay.  You offer up something to ship or you as the carrier, and people will bid on delivery.  It could be someone going on vacation and going your way or a dispatched trying to cap off a load.  I only used it once to ship a couple of FE engines from Nebraska to Michigan.  Early bids were $800-1000.  Within a couple of days, a independent dispatcher bid $375 insured.  Engines arrived just like any other freight carrier.

Bumper:  The chrome guys did those bumpers for $500 each.  With all the straightening and many coats of copper to smooth the bolt holes, I'm happy with the price and quality(plus I got to look over their shoulder and learn a bunch about chrome...really cool!!!).  What about the Bumper Boyz.  They tour the big car shows.  Your can order from them and pickup at the closest car show that they attend???????????  Just a thought.  If you are going to custom chrome anything, the better the core--the cheaper it is.  Those pitted castings can be saved but require coat after coat of copper to fill and buff those holes full.

would hesitate to do the Bumper Boyz have yet to hear anyone happy with them after a year or so. Do a search on the HAMB and see what I mean.

I have shipped (greyhound) 2 doors,2 fenders,2 inner fenders, and a tailgate from Santa Barbara ,California to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Very pleased with the service and price. My cousin wrapped them well, he used pipe insulation on the door edges. Then wrapped everything in stiff cardboard. Their website has a calculator for estimating charges, enter the size and weight, orgin and destination, and they get pretty close on the $$$. Now if they only could fit a body shell in that bus.......... :003:

The bumpers I have seen look good initially, but I believe the nickel plate is quite thin, and the chrome plate is definitely thin.  If you keep your car inside, and keep it waxed, I can't see that that it would be a problem.   If you leave it outside and never wash it, yeah, I guess you won't be happy with it after a year or two. I am having a glass bumper "spray plated".  If you havent seen this done before, google it, you wont believe it.  There is a guy here locally that does it, did a whole sport bike not long ago, pretty cool to see a chrome motorcycle, lol.  Anyway, my back bumper will be chrome steel.

I did not think anybody would notice those bumpers all rapped up.  They are the only thing in that loft that go to my project car.  I didn't mean to tease anyone.

While searching for a chrome shop, I found some that skip the copper plating phase and do only nickel and chrome.  It looks OK for a while.  The guy I found straightens, grinds, and then belt sands.  Then plates in copper and buffs the copper.  If there is a scratch, pin hole or grinder mark, back for another layer of copper.  I did ask about how long the plating should last and he said that plating is extremely hard and should never wear out.  He said the biggest mistake in glass, chrome, and stainless maintenance is that we polish it TOO much.  Chrome, stainless, and glass should never have polish/wax that is used for paint.  Use a non cleaning type of paste wax...not a polish/cleaning wax.  The cleaning wax has fine compound in it to clean the dead layers of paint away.  On two stage paints, we should not be using a polish/cleaner type wax.  I thought that was kind of interesting.  I cleaned out the car care products in my garage.

Gasman:    Where did you get those pics? Have you been in my shop atic?  Just wondering if you have a decent front seat, actually a real good front seat that you might want to get rid of . If you do shipping would not be an issue. I am going to Lexington in a couple weeks, and from there to the Columbus spring swap meet. Coming from north of Toronto and you arn`t too far out of my way. I also have been selling off surplus peices from past projects. I am kinda heavy into FE stuff and Fairlane parts.  Maybe I have something you could use.  Need a cracked 427 marine block?    Cheers  Gary

I have a front, bench, folding seat that I removed from a '57 Custom Tudor.  I don't know how to confirm that it is original.  Tell me what to measure and take pictures of and I will PM you.  If it is to go to Canada, local pickup is the only way to go.

I dumped the FE stuff when the market was stronger.  Just a few truck parts left...nothing worth mentioning.

The 427 marine...if the crack is in the cylinder wall, it's probably repairable.  Many of the 427 marines were cast as side oiler blocks but drilled as center oilers.  So if it is a side oiler, cross bolt main block that could be repaired, there is someone somewhere perking up their ears right now.

Gasman: I would appreciate a couple pics of the seat if you could. And maybe a price. My address: estaterc@sympatico.ca And yes this block is very repairable, which is what I was going to do until  I had the good fortune of finding a better one that needed no repairs.   thanks  Gary

I would call them good used.  I think that I had this set on a '57 once.  So I'm thinking that these would be ready to run.  Used but runable.  Stored inside and dry.  Not disassembled...each side in one piece.  $220.00 plus shipping.  If you're interested, let me get them out, take pictures and inspect.  I will also weight and quote shipping.  I afraid it will be pricey.  I need a ZIP.  PayPal or US Post Office Money Order.  If you're coming to NASCAR at Michigan International Speedway, I'll mow you a spot back in the field and you can stay the week.  Save the shipping, too.

Gasman - Thanks for the offer to go to the speedway, but really can't do it. I'll have to pass on the Granada setup. A little out of my range at this time.
Title: Re: 1957 Ford parts liquidation
Post by: gasman826 on 2012-04-13 07:50
I understand completely.  There was not much information to compare pricing of used Granada setups.  I only found one set online and it sold for $280.  The $220 price is nearly a 1/3 of new Granada brakes and the Drop & Stop kits.  If I am out of line, say so.  I offered, you counter offer.  I can only so no.  Things are tough in Michigan, too.
Take care,
Gary

Both turn signal harness clamps are on the column.  I don't want to take them off a complete column.  I spent a little time looking through loose parts bins and did not find them.  I will continue to keep an eye out for them.  If someone else wants to jump in here and help out...more power to you.

Thanks!

The frame is from a '57 Custom Tudor.
- $100 as pictured without the rear end and wheels
- $100 as pictured and you trade me four '57 wheels and a '57 rear end
- $450 as pictured
Other trades and counter offers considered.

Yes, the three that are on the Retractable and the two on the Ranchero are identical to my 65 Bird wheels except the 15" thing with the Bird wheels for the disc brakes.

I take it that that is not the steering wheel on your car.
Edit: Oops!  Sorry, Blue, thought I was responding to Ecode. (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/TomIII/smilies/shog.gif)
*******************
Like the other dark pix I have seen I can not make out the detail of the ribs on the spokes. Except for the horn button I expected those wheels to be very much the same as the '56 ones   But that little kink in the spokes just below those ribs?  Hmm ...  that don't look right.

Well, you, (Ecode), forced me to go out in the woods in the snow & dark to see again what that poor old rusting away, plain Jane '56 Ford Ranch Wagon's steering wheel looked like.
Wasn't confronted by any big pissed off moose though.  (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/TomIII/smilies/hawt.gif)   (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/TomIII/smilies/lol.gif)

What I said about the arm rests...forget it.  I have four arm rests...not two pair and one IS grey.
There are two '57 arm rests but they are both for the right side...one willow and the other light blue.
There is a pair of charcoal grey (right and left) but they are not '57.  The screw spacing is correct so they will fit BUT ARE NOT '57.

I have one instrument cluster left.  I took it out of a dash this morning.  I tested the speedo and odometer.  I also tested the constant voltage relay (gauge regulator) and both gauges.  Every thing works.  I can not guarantee the accuracy but they pass bench tests.  No harness.  Dirty.  Not very good chrome.  These have recently sold on eBay for $25-65 shipped, untested, unrestored.  $30 shipped First Class to your door.  PM me for PayPal account ID or US POSTAL money order.

Gasman, the blue & green ones sure look like left armrests to me!  The ribs go toward the front.
I have seen some pix here where someone had them mounted on the wrong sides.
I would be happy to trade you a a right side armrest for one of those.  They are about in the same shape as yours.  One green, one black.

I don't have.  I almost bought a complete grill with hardware this past weekend at Gas City swap just because it was there.  It needed chrome and straightening but did have the brackets and turn signals.  The center bar was included but the attachment hardware was rusty and probably would not survive disassembly.  I made new center bar attachment hardware with stainless.

Gasman826 -  Would you happen to have a front bench seat for a 57?  Or would you happen to know where I can get one here locally in Michigan?  It doesn't have to be perfectly correct, as long as it looks right in a 57, and will accept a seat belt kit.

Thanks!

On another note...late this summer, I will be offering the farm at auction.  Farm auctions around here have a history of doing well.  The new garage will be complete and moved into.  Traveling to the farm to work in the shop and do other maintenance is no where near the fun I thought it would be.  Therefore, the barn will be emptied!!!  Over the past several months, several people have helped reduce the inventor.  Though well picked, there are still many remaining jewels.  I'm not saying that I'm giving it away but I certainly have conceded all my negotiating leverage.

- some '64-66 TBird interior parts
- 460
- C6
- 9" rear
- very few Courier specific parts
- Custom frames and suspension
- Custom interior
- 3 speed transmission

There are 3:58 and 3:89 on the tags.  The other tags are too rusty.  There is a '65 TBird rear and Lincoln Versailles disc brake rear.  These are all 28 spline open rears still in the housings.  Ordinarily I would have no problem pulling each pig to check the ratio and put it in a 5 gallon bucket and ship UPS, but the clock is ticking.

are any of the 460's complete running engines,?
Title: Re: 1957 Ford parts liquidation
Post by: gasman826 on 2014-08-08 19:10
One is running.  But not complete.  It was the first engine in GEN I '57.  '74 vintage Lincoln with straight up timing chain and Holley carb and the HD Lincoln C6.  I also put in a Melling oil pump and Milodon oil pan.  When I went to Gen II '57, I started with another block and went to the TKO600 so the original 460 was mothballed without oil pump and pan (original style pan bolted on for storage).  I have two complete Lincoln 460s with carb, brackets, pulleys, pump, and alternator.  I can't confirm running.  The one is complete with exhaust pipes, converters, and transmission.  The mid '70s Lincolns usually got the best maintenance and the body/interior became tacky long before the engine and tranny wore out.  Most of the 460s I've rebuilt had cranks in spec.  I have them polished up and installed standard bearings.  Anyway, I'm sure there are running 460s closer to you in Texas than mine in Michigan.  I hate to see these go to scrap but there is less than six weeks to the auction.  Maybe I can stuff one or two of these under the benches at the new shop!
