Getting engine pulled next week, the main question is will a 302 engine bolt up to my ford-o-matic transmission,I belive its a five bolt, will not know for sure until sometime next week when the garage gets the 292 pulled out.Just trying to get all the info on the swap before hand. Thanks

The quick answer is no the stock tranny will not bolt to a 302.

ok then,I thought a early rebuilt 302 with five bolt would, and I knew that newer 302 had six bolt hook ups,So now I'm at a lost at what to do,the motor has to be replaced, trying to save money.

I am no expert about the possibility of some kind of adaptor, so I won't address if that is a possibility.

My engine swap with strict budget involved using a 302 and a C4 transmission, the combo in late 60s Fords. The rebuilt C4 cost me about $750. Then, there is the issue of needing a new driveshaft, too...about $200-400(?).

I do wish I had the money at the time to bump up to the AOD (automatic overdrive) tranny for freeway driving, but they cost $1500-2000. Maybe later.

Big swaps like this are expensive.

All 302's had 6 bolt bellhousing, all 260's had a 5 bolt bellhousing.  289's could be either depending on build date.

Well the 292 is out of the car, rebuilted 302 is supposed to be ordered, have to go to junk yard to pick up transmission to fit it along with driveshaft.

What year?  I know the 302 is going to be a 1974 year model.

93 & down F-150, 98 & down MK-VIII, not sure about the Crown/Merc mid 90s for sure, just don't know the top or bottom.  T-Birds/Cougar with 302, 89 and up to I think 95.

well delays on getting the engine here, next quesrion, what type of headers will fit without having to beat the heck out of them.

Frankenstein57

The 302 fox body mustang headers are supposed to fit.

I swapped a 1972 302 into my 58 ford using a 1989 aod from a pickup. Mine was originally a 223 car,but I used 84 mustang motor mounts, and an 88 mustang trans mount. With these motor mounts they can be swapped side to side which will move the motor forward or backward depending on how they are installed. One of the ways (farther forward) put the trans mount in the stock location. I never even removed the trans crossmember during my swap. Fox body mustang headers will fit (stock or aftermarket) hope this helps a bit.

Well finally the motor is in the ranchero and does run,put in a C-6 automatic transmission, now to find a junk yard driveshaft that will fit,the trans. and the rear end.I know I will have to get it cut to size, just need to figue out what driveshaft will be the closet fit. This has been a nightmare of a engine swap, its been one thing after another.
