I want to replace my 57 steering box with a 58 box, a place online sells remanufactured boxes for $500. Plus core.  Question is will the 58 shaft fit into the 57 column(housing)?  If not what do you recommend?

The problem will be the horn wiring.  Never done one, but that's the problem others have had. At 500 for a rebuilt '58 box, you're starting to approach a new Borgenson unit.

It will be $675. Because I don't have a 58 core to return, with the borgenson, isn't that only the box and then you need new shaft, column housing and?  I don't want power steering also, I have only seen power units.

Call them and see what they offer.
I'm sure they sell some manual boxes.

Has anyone used,the manual borgeson box, if so do you have part number, if used with aftermarket column, what length would you order? Thanks for the help guys and or ladies.

There's a used 58 box on epay right now. Item 272161231429. Even comes with a pitman arm which you have to change doing this swap. I purchased a 59 box from this guy and all I did to it was put a sector shaft seal in it & cleaned it up. Only problem I ran into was the length of the steering column tube was about an inch too long. Still haven't fixed the horn wire situation but "one of these days". One of the best modifications I've done to mine.

Summit sells manual Borgeson boxes. I used a '58 box; the '57 column, a '59 steering wheel and a '59 turn signal switch that has a horn contact plate (see below)....

if you look at my borgeson box install you will see i used a coupler,a 59 center shaft[cut to the needed lenth]a 59 turn signal switch and modified the column tube to fit the box

If you are going with manual look at a 61 - 64 Galaxie box.  It is bolt up, available rebuilt from NAPA and a 61 - 63 T-Bird column with a rag joint in a bolt up (nearly so).  Look at my build thread on the Ranchero to see the fit.

I got that 58 box that was on eBay, great deal$10.00 plus shipping. Low rider said he changed sector shaft seal on one he had purchased , trying to find info on how to do that . Any diagrams or info available for that?

You will need to pull the pitman arm off, thats fun. The sector shaft will probably need to be removed also, I had mine out and the whole box apart when I replaced the seal.

To remove the seal I just drilled a small hole in the old seal, screwed in a small metal screw and grabbed it with a pair of pliers to pry it out. Inspected the sector shaft for rust, grooves or other damage then installed the new seal. Working fine for a couple years now with no leaks. And yes, the Pitman arm is "fun" to remove.

My install will be simpler, I am considering installing the power steering Borgeson box on the stock steering column.  My question is would the '59-61 turn signal switch work with the '57 parts so that turn signals and horn would still work?

I have located a decent priced NOS switch assembly.

I've also been looking at pictures of the Borgeson install and it seems, as far as I can tell, that the cut off shaft is going directly into the new box.  I thought that you had to install a rag joint and/or a universal joint.

I don't see any reason why it wouldn't. Everything is connected to the column or the steering wheel. the shaft just attatches to the steering wheel. I am also (almost) positive you will need a rag joint or a universal to connect the shaft to the box.

I was looking at pictures in the gallery and found several that had new steering boxes installed and it just appeared to me that the steering shaft went straight to the new box.  However, it was so close to the fire wall that I could not be sure.

By the way, these steering boxes are on eBay for less than Borgeson sells them for.  $578.55 w/free shipping.

If I use the '59-'61 turn signal switch, I assume that I will take the horn wire out of the back of the steering wheel assembly and then run that to the horn relay and the mechanical parts of the turn signal assembly will function just like they do with the '57 parts.

If the angle between the new steering box and the existing shaft is the same, I'd rather use the rag joint.
