maybe engine related, but still main focus is on the trans. both of my  5.0 AODs came with flexplates with heavy counterweights welded to them. Is this external balancing for the 5.0 (302 - which ?) and will it be needed with a 289, 351W or ultimately a Y block ?

Ford Blue blood

Fundamentally no.  All 302/289 produced through 1981 used 28 oz. external balanced components.  All 351W & C used the 28 oz.as well.  As a note, the corresponding harmonic balancer  is required as well.

I believe the Y-block is internally balanced.

thank you very much, I wouldn't have thought about the respective front balancer unit.
wasn't aware that all SBFs use the same counterweight.

My 5.0/AOD flexplate has a large weight on it.
