Eyebrows
« on: February 28, 2017, 11:46:42 AM »

I'm wanting to buy in good shape the eyebrow that fits on the fender ( drivers side ) for a 1957 ford fairlane 500 Retractable or from any 57 ford fairlanes, I have the right part number if you need it.

Any '57 Ford will be the same, does not have to be a Fairlane. If no one here has one, give Roger, the Kansas guy a call. His contact info is in our supplier list under salvage yards.
They are not made as reproductions and are hard to find with all the mounting studs still intact.

I've been watching them. I have a pass side I don't like. Always expensive, as are the brackets that go on the inside of the fender.

A few weeks ago, I saw a pr listed with a buy it now price of $450.  I don't know if they sold but I wouldn't pay that much for them.  I don't have a right side and my left side has been hit.  Good luck if bidding on these.

Missing studs can be repaired with unseen repairs.  It is much harder to make good collision repairs.  A little fresh masking tape keep mine in place until I get around to repairing the studs.

It's unfortunate with pot metal and thin aluminum, that attempted soldering or brazing can go from almost hot enough to ruined rather quickly. I tried to repair a couple studs on a set and learned what not to do. JB weld might work on stud repair or just JB weld them in place without studs. Do the really ever need to be removed again? Not really.

I used JB Weld for repairing one stud, it seemed to work fine after nervously tightening! My car didn't have them and I wound up paying "big money" for mine....

Re: studs.  I have a Ford service bulletin that spells out the method of repairing missing studs.  You drill 3 or 4 (I don't remember for sure) holes in the eyebrow, countersink them, drill matching holes in the fender, and use oval head trim screws to secure the trim.  With that documentation, I would think even show cars should be allowed to use that method without losing points.   John

I went with JBweld , not too worried I will add a little calking to be safe. Granted only a couple of studs were gone. Off topic , but a question for Gasman. In the pic.your of wagon, are those front rims 15" or 14 "? I am desperately looking for a pair of skinny 15`s and they look like 15`s. If so , do you want to part with them or maybe you know of another pair.   thanks   Gary

Old stuff.  They are not skinnys.  15x7.  All four are the same.  I buy them 1 or 2 at a time.  The specs are the same and the look alike.  It wouldn't surprise me if all four are different manufacturers.  I have a couple of 14x7 (will fit over OEM disc brakes) and a pair of 15x8.5 (using them for rollers).  I like old Torque Thrusts and slotted aluminums.  I buy every 15" cheap one I find (except uni-lugs)...don't buy old mags unless for wall hangers.  I have four more in a corner but haven't polished yet.  My other '57 has bigs and littles in slotted aluminums but are newer (15x4 and 15x12).

Those new slots look great on your car but I need old school. I have an orig.white 61 Fairlane post car that was a drag car all its life. Original owner was Morris Lee of Ogdensburg NY. This old Fairlane earned him a Thunderbolt. His Thunderbolt is alive and well, fully restored and somewhere in the East. Anyway, I have the big rears but yet to find old skinny`s for the front in 15`s. Not sure if they were ever made.

availability is way I searched out the new ones.  I sprayed a little acid on the new ones to age them.  They look no different from the originals.  By the way, my son was aghast when he saw me spray acid on brand new wheels!
