Title: What's the best way to compress the front springs?
Post by: johns2000 on 2009-04-11 13:10
I'm doing my disc brake conversion and was wondering how you guy's compressed the front coil springs to get the old spindles off? I've got the tie rods off and the upper and lower ball joints freed up, do I need to rent a spring compressor and what does Drop'em Stop'em mean by our coil springs compress from the top?

Thanks for your help

The safe way is to buy or rent a spring compressor.  If you have a good floor jack and some 3/8 chain what I do is put the jack under the lower crossmember wrap the chain over the frame and under the jack and hook the chain than jack up lower aframe remove ball joint connection. DO NOT let the jack down fast or all the way the SPRING CAN COME OUT WITH SOME FORCE AND IS DANGEROUS. Like I said the spring compressor is the safest.

If you have the shocks out you can use a piece of threaded rod with a piece of angle iron accross the bottom opening. At least 3/4" rod, with heavy washers. Mark
