Title: Peaking clear coat fix?
Post by: Zapato on 2016-09-24 13:44
Looking at a truly off topic car for my oldest gran daughter's first car. Factory clear coat is pealing off. Best and easiest (best and easy don't always co-exist) to deal with this issue. Car is a super deal and the price reflects the paint issue. Anyone of you guys ever deal with this problem.

Going to guess it might be possible to sand off the clear and reshoot it, and that would be the only good solution.

80 grit, DA, primer, 220 grit, primer, new paint......only way to "fix" the issue.  Or 220 grit, DA, and a discount auto painter.

Never did find a reason why the factory paint came off in sheets.  Mostly GM and Chrysler as I recall with a few FoMoCo having clear coat issues but not the "sheet" issue.

Found a simpler fix. Going to buy a different car same kind of money but one owner and all service records, etc....

Hello there.  The problem with the clear coat was that some bean counter high up thought he could save some money and only put 1 coat of clear on those cars and trucks. That's why the hood, roof, trunk lid all pealed. Unfortunately the only fix is to sand and re-color, sorry.
