Well, baseball is over for my boys this season, so back to the old 57!
I found the BB Toploader I was looking for, but found out the 1965 Mustang - Hurst Super Competition shifter I had, wont work on this transmission.
So I am looking @ purchasing a new shifter. Here's my question:
Has anybody used the Short throw Hurst on there 57 Fairlane. My worry is that it maybe to far forward for my 6'1" body to reach with the seat clear back. Here's the link: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/huu-3917535
I found a brand new one here locally for $250 OBO, just need to see if it will work because I like the shorter shift throw.
or go to the Hurst Competiton Plus with the big sweeping handle... https://www.summitracing.com/parts/huu-3913180
Thanks for any information/opinion you all may have.

I have never used the short throw type, I just prefer the long one on street cars. But way back in my memory I put a 302 and top loader from a Galaxie in my 66 Mustang, the shifter mounting was too far forward and Hurst made an adapter that bolted to the tail shaft to move it back a few inches, don't know if they still have those or not..
I have a Competition Plus on mine. It is the one that has a removable handle with no offset, it came off of a '64 Vette and is listed as also fitting a Fairlane. I did a lot of research and trial and error and found there are two shifters that work, one has an offset welded handle the other is what I wound up using (I tried both). I now have two shifter handles, one puts the shifter knob almost on the front seat in 4th, the other moves it up and forward by an inch or two. If you want to go this way I will take a few pics and dig up some part numbers. Run of the mill Comp Plus shifters do not have the reverse connection in the right location. There are three different shifter locations and several mounting plates corresponding to the different tailshafts and transmission lengths. My toploader is out of a Mustang..... The Summit listing is the one that I first tried, you cant change the handle on it and it needs a bigger tunnel cut.
This is the shifter I used.... 391-5405

Here are the shifter sticks. I have a 538-6900 and a 538-7236.

This adapter puts the shifter in the correct place.

Thanks guys for the information, looks like my current shifter will work after all, just need a different installation kit.
lalessi1: As always, you've done your homework! Thanks for those websites, helped me a ton!

Hope I helped, I have part numbers for the stuff I used if you need it. Your tranny tailshaft PN will make a big difference.
