Title: Emergency Brake components.
Post by: 57ford on 2014-11-30 12:07
Howdy. Does any of you nice chaps know where I can get hold of this:

http://57fordsforever.com/smf/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=4227.0;attach=7293;image
(apologies for stealing the pic from somewhere else on here!)

What I am actually missing is the lever that swivels on the trans crossmember and the link between that and the equaliser. I have a 58 one, but I think they are slightly different?
Thanks awfully, Robin.

my 1958 ford parts book shows most of these parts have 1957 part numbers,so they should fit

This is good news! So the only part I have missing is the actual lever. I have tried the online parts emporiums but have so far come up with zip.

The lever looks like it would be fairly simple to make out of 3/16" flat bar if you had the dimensions.

The '57 threaded adjustment rod is available as a repop from the aftermarket.  I should have a couple of the levers.  Give me a little time.  I put it on my list of to-dos.

There may be two types:
Type 1

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1957-1958-1959-Ford-Custom-Fairlane-Galaxie-500-Transmission-Frame-Crossmember-/201210497007?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2ed91487ef&vxp=mtr

Type 2? See 1137-1.jpg.

The shop manual shows the second type. They require different levers. I have "type 1" and have yet to get the right lever. The one I have is mounted but the leverage/travel won't work. Not trying to confuse the issue but making sure won't hurt especially given your location.

I am still looking....

A little clarification on my previous post. I have been told by a salvage yard guy there are two types of crossmember designs found in 1957 Fords. The crossmember in the jpg matches what is in the 57 Ford Shop Manual, the one on the link is a newer design supposedly. They use a different parking brake lever. My parking brake "works", I have new cables etc.,
but the movement does not give me either adequate force or movement to actually "lock" the brakes. I have a crossmember that matches the one in the link not the Manual/jpg one. It is important in my opinion to match the lever to the crossmember. I believe I have the wrong crossmember and or lever. I think Ford used a pedal actuated parking/emergency brake in 1959 and later maybe creating my issue....

I think you are correct..59 = pedal actuated. I think the e-bay link is for a '59. The pic of the rusty one is like the all '57's I've seen. I have no idea what that rod on the right is.
BTW, a reminder...the threaded adjustment rod I got from Dennis Carpenter is wrong. It's in the pic on the first post of this thread, and was the reason I had posted that pic.
It would be interesting if anyone here has a different crossmember than what's in the pic. I've never heard of there being two oem types as your salvage yard guy suggested....But it seems like every week I hear of something for the first time.

I've never seen but one type but who knows.. All the ones for a 57 that I have seen are like your rusty .jpg picture. You really have to watch Evilbay sellers, many have know idea what they have  :003:

The rod on the right and the bracket to the left are clutch linkage parts..

Jim you are right, the extraneous parts in the pic are for clutch linkage. I forgot to mention that.

Do you plan on changing the cross member? Hopefully you can find on at the salvage yard. There is one listed on Ebay but $50 seems a little high to me, but I'm cheap  :003:

I bought it.... $50 is a good price to me! Thanks Jim, I have been dealing with this a while. I bought the crossmember I have now a couple of years ago and apparantly it is a '59, my car didn't have one when I got it. Now I need the lever... like Robin did when he started this thread, woops. One step closer.

Robin gets it. it was his thread. A picture of it would help me overcome my grief....I will put it by my bed. Besides I found a crossmember! :001:

I'm not sure, I was thinking it was not so curved., and the cable attachment point was different. Also you can't always go by the pictures in the manuals, I've noticed other 56 pictures that were carried over to the 57 manual. If you can wait until tomorrow morning I crawl under an double check unless someone else response.

Thanks Jim. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That ebay part is not the same as the '57's. Will it work? I don't know....it is very similar, but if the sizes are too much different you're going to end up with a problem with the cables. Domino effect.
As far as making one from "barstock"...I wouldn't. Remember what it's doing here...there's alot of force being put on that bar. It should be made from a high strength steel, not from something easily formable.

This is the only style I have or had my hands on.  My setup is modified.  I'm still using OEM stuff except custom cross member.  I used LoKar cable kit with the SVO rear disc brakes and the little drum parking brake.  Parking brake works excellent.  The rear tires will lock up with very little effort.

Thanks guys, now I at least know what I am looking for looks like. My 57 crossmember shipped today. I have a lever that is straight and pinned on one end, I may try drilling other holes just for grins. :003:

Lynn, your arm may work with the 57 cross member. You have it mounted different then I have seen any. The arm is suppose to go through the slots!!!!!!! The 57 will have a different mounting..
Title: Re: Emergency Brake components.
Post by: lalessi1 on 2014-12-09 12:00
I imagined it was supposed to go through the slots but it would fit or even line up. When I got it, my car had a straight pipe for a crossmember and that lever was on it. I have no idea what it came off of. The emergency cable was broken under the dash. I used a bolt as a pin and made it fit. It all moves freely but won't fully engage the brakes. Hence my "quest".... I live in flat landia so the parking brake function is not that critical but my goal is to get everything working as it is supposed to.

I should have made it more clear, sorry. The arm you have almost looks like the 57 and may work with the new cross memeber. I think the type arm used on your present cross member has a notch on the end and fits into the slots.. I think my Mustang used that type. There clear as mud  :003:

I saw the notch in some later levers and I figured out how that was supposed to work. The arm I have is dead straight but no notch and my car seems to have had a mid 70's donor car...spindles, disc brakes, 302, AOD etc. It is really an exercise to try to figure this stuff out. I love it!!!

I make lots of notes now. Unfortunately when I build my 1960 truck in 1975 I didn't. Now I have a hard time remembering what I did yesterday...

Picked through parts today and found this style of parking brake lever.  I have three cross members that I removed from '57s and none used this style.

If the '59 went to a foot activated parking brake, why would it need the mechanical advantage of the lever.

Update on the ebrake equalizer/cross member saga. I found what I believe (thanks to gasman826) to be the correct equalizer bar for the '59 crossmember now in my car. I started to try it in the car only to realize my REAL PROBLEM. The mounting bracket that holds the actuating cable on the '59 crossmember is several inches closer to the center than the one on the 57 crossmember (I also have the correct crossmember). There appears to be no way to get the correct leverage/travel with the 59 crossmember. When looking to put in the 57 crossmember I realized that the cable mounting bracket on it is dead on center with my exhaust pipe. Wow, now I have to move the exhaust pipe. I have a 57 truck equalizer bar that looks like it will work but I am still looking for the correct equalizer bar.

Finally found a 57 car equalizer bracket, moved the exhaust pipe, installed the 57 crossmember, and after 2 years I have a properly operating eBrake...yipee!

Good news Lynn. I just finished installing my T85 again Friday and I hate doing the cross members. I need a frame spreader  :003:

With all the mods/welding I did on mine the crossmember shrunk just enough that I can push it in place with the palm of my hand. Sure made it alot easier.

Lucky you, every 57 I've worked on are a pain to get back in.

Yeah, swapping out the crossmember was a real fricking pain...
