Title: road trips and shows........where ya'll going?
Post by: RICH MUISE on 2020-02-26 20:07
With the season right around the corner, I got to thinking this is a topic rarely brought up here, which strikes me as odd since this is why we build cars, right? I've already done 2 '57 roadtrips this year. One in January for a cruise-in in Nacona, Tx, and the second to the Starbird show in Tulsa, Ok. My next one may be to the Goodguys show in Fort Worth on the 13-15 March. After that, I'm not sure. I need to check on the Park in the Park show in Rio Rancho,NM, I think in April, but haven't found anything yet......Eric? got any info? got it: April 25th
After that my only for sures are July 4 in Santa Fe and later in July for the Thin Air Nationals in Green Mountain Falls, Co.
So where are you planning?

BTW, if any of you are passing thru Amarillo on the first Saturday of the month, weather permitting, there is a cruise-in at the corner of Hillside and Bell. Good weather may see as many as 80-100 cars. Late afternoon

x2! I flew to the FE Race&Reunion in 2018, had a blast. I am making plans to drive to Beaver Springs PA, from Vancouver BC Canada this April, about 40 hours one way. Hope to hit the Henry Ford Museum in Detroit on the way.

I may just make down to Amarillo after I hang up the snowmobiles for the season. With the weather we've had, I haven't even ventured across town. I'm really thinking about driving up to the Back to the 50s show at the Minnesota state fair ground in June.

Detroit Autorama (may need the T with tracks to get there), Hot Rod Power Tour, Goodguys Columbus, Old 27 Tour, Duck Tail Run/James Dean Reunion, Auburn Car Auction, Dream Cruise, Gilmore Museum.  And everyday to a show somewhere...I have Authentic Plates so I am always going to a show, an event, a parade, a car wash, a gas station, or getting some kind of service estimate.

Les, Sounds like we'll have multiple opportunities to get together again this summer. I know you've got family in Lubbock, but you and Kelly are always welcome to stay with us, and our dogs like company too if you travel with them.
I'd also like to do the Abbey show in Canon City and maybe Alamosa, and Woodland Park/Cripple Creek. Trying to figure out how to do all this and save money for a really long '57 roadtrip to Florida to see friends and family there. First and hardest step is to stay out of the casinos that somehow are always near the shows and roadtrips I like, lol.

59 Meteor,
Are you bringing your race car or driving to see stuff along the way?
I'll be in the Airstream trailer, stop on by.

Ron, we are looking to retire from the West Coast of Canada, so I plan to drive to Beaver Springs, since its "kinda" on the way to Nova Scotia. From Vancouver BC to Halifax is a mere 5960 Kilometers (3725 miles) one way, so stopping in at Beaver Springs is only about a 42 hour , 2836 mile drive. Then after the FE race, its just another 17 hours to get to Halifax NS. So I will just make the trip in my 4 cylinder Ford Ranger. Good news is, from Halifax , going to Beaver Springs the next year is 973 miles each way, rather than the 2836 miles Home currently is. Good thing my tow vehicle can squeeze 8 miles per gallon!

Kerby, I'll have to let you know closer to the show date........I'm leaning at this point to not putting the '57 in. I'm trying to save for a long '57 trip to Florida, and goodguys gets expensive...gas, food, motel for 2 nights in that area is 120+ per night, 90. reg. fee if you re-up your membership, etc etc.
When I did the show before, I've always parked in the first main area on the left as you come up from the track underpass.
Are you bringing your '57?

West coast...Tampa and south. My son, old school friend, and my ex wife live in Tampa area, have a sister about an hour south in Venice and another old friend from Colorado in Punta Gorda. My brother-in-law was a mechanic, and my go-to guy when I was young, didn't know anything, and needed cars fixed. I'd sure like him to see what I've built. He and his brother had a Sunoco station/repair shop in Waltham, Mass. They both retired millionaires. You had to make an appointment weeks in advance to get your car in their shop. 40+ yeaqrs of greasy hard work paid off!
It'll have to be spring or fall, I couldn't handle the heat and humidity of the summer there now in my old age. I'd like to do a car show or two while I'm there, I'm told thery're a daily event in Florida.
Lynn, on my way there I'd sure like to stop and have a cup of coffee with you.....it's right on my way!

Rich, I'm not taking the 57. I haven't been in a couple of years and decided to go this year. Keep my cell number and if you decide to go let me know and I'll look for you. I wanted to hit the swap meet and savor the surroundings.

Randy, been liquidating lots of parts, and pieces, but plan on bringing all the vehicles along. I have a pair of NOS Boss 429 fender decals that I bought 40 years ago, if you are interested.

Thanks for the offer, but I doubt I'll ever get around to painting it. The decals would have to be black for a Grabber orange car. Good news I see there are two drag strips their, bad news is their only 1/8 mile. better than nuttin I suppose.

Randy, both the dragstrips I visited during our 3 week holiday in the Maritimes last year were 1/4 mile, Greenfield Dragway near Liverpool Nova Scotia, and Miramichi Dragway in Miramichi New Brunswick are 1/4 mile strips. I have not been to the Cape Breton strip yet, so not sure how long that track is. We did check out the Eastbound complex in Newfoundland, that is a 1/8th mile IHRA strip.

Kerby..I'm 95% sure I'm not going...chance of rain/thunderstorms is 70-80% Friday and Saturday in DWF.
Thought about going to the Tri State show in Denver until I checked the weather there...90% chance of snow Friday! Ain't going there either, lol. Oh well, maybe just a roadtrip where the sun's shinin'..........or stay home and go to a free Amarillo NSRA inspection they're doing on Saturday at Lloyd Tripplet's garage, which is just around the corner from Pat Fleishman's dad's garage. I need to get my "safety 23" inspection sticker renewed. I do need to get under the car an adjust my e-brake before that.

Haha, I may still change my mind.forecast improved a little bit, and with all the virus related cancellations going on, this may be the last big one going on for who knows how long.
PM me your phone number in case I go.
Goodguys next event in Scottsdale was cancelled today, nsra had cancellations as well. There's a thread going on in the Hamb about the virus' effects on our hobby, with a bunch of cancellations listed.
Be safe...stay your distance.

I decided not to make the trip after another check on the forecast. Friday morning check was showing a few hours with a break but mostly rain. I called the organizer and they said they had some  vendors cancel on them but not a lot.  I was afraid of getting there and more cancellations and not many cars showing up. I will plan on the one in September.

That was a good decision as the City of Fort Worth mandated they closed down at 1pm Friday. Aside from the virus thing, It was raining heavily all morning Friday, and the tunnel under the racetrack was flooded. I got this info from an Amarillo man who went down on Thursday with his fingers crossed. He actually got into the area early, but said he only saw about 30 cars.....far cry from the normal 2000+.

Rich,, if you take that trip to Santa Fe take side trip to Taos if you have the time. Nice drive up a long a meandering stream into town. Taos is a nice little town. The Colorado River Gorge is a breathtaking sight. And the view of the mountains towards the Ski Valley Ia awesome.
As for shows for me, it's going to be strictly local ones for me this year. Unfortunately, car show season parallels dirt track season. I'm already behind the power curve there, lol. One year, I'd love to get back up to Louisville for the NSRA show in August. Me and my late wife would go every year for the 4 days and enjoy all we could. Even tho we lived only 40 miles we'd stay at the Fairgrounds to make the most of our time.

Rory,
We know about that 8 mpg, that's what my buddy's Excursion gets while pulling the Airstream. It picked up about 1 mpg from pulling a boxier Holiday Rambler and the Airstream is about 1500 lbs heavier.

Have a great trip, hope this covid stuff is over by then so things will be open for you to see.

Good luck,

Ron B.

Went to a NSRA Appreciation even yesterday, right at 125 cars.  Mostly the greying crowd, not but one person did the "fist bump" thing, everyone else was warm and friendly, shook hands.  Only talk was about how "freaked out" the rest of the world is.  Got the 36 "Safety 23" inspected and got the sticker.

Little funny, one of the door prizes was a four pack of TP and a can of Lysol.

Post by: RICH MUISE on 2020-03-15 10:53
Haha........now that's a useful doorprize.
I did an NSRA thing yesterday as well, but it was an inspection thing at a local long time hot rodder's shop. I got my safety 23 sticker as well. The crew chief was really interested in my engine choice with tons of questions. We also had a long talk about the merits of Ron Francis wiring to replace the Painless wiring the po used and has issues with.
There were about 40-ish cars there, not much handshaking, but a ton of elbow bumps. They had a nice barbque with free food.

Ace:...I did the trip to Albuquerque/Santa Fe/Taos/Red River a week or so ago. Yes, the highway that runs along the river is pretty scenic, and really neat in the summertime when all the rafters are out. That "meandering stream" is not the Colorado River, btw, it's the Rio Grande. The Colorado River does not go thru New Mexico. It is the river I70 follows thru Glenwood Springs andGrand Junction into Utah then Arizona. It is the border between Arizona and Ca. (Hoover Dam).
I do car shows in all 4 cities I mentioned, but the Taos one hasn't been done for 3 years now. This year, I took a different route to get from Albuquerque to Santa Fe. Instead of interstate 25, I took a beautiful mountain road from Tejeras north to Santa Fe. It runs along the mountain crests overlooking the valley that I25 runs thru. Beautiful scenery.

Also the biggest swap meet on the west coast, there motto "Always in April" Portland Swap Meet is also cancelled 3,500 vendors and over 50,000 spectators from Canada and the western United States, They also closed all the schools till further notice, pretty much the same in Washington State. Looks like the rod run season is going to be really short this year!  No word yet from NSRA but with NASCAR, NHRA, MLB, NBA, PGA and all the rest cancelling or delaying major events I'm betting word is not too far out.

Guess the "car stuff" is going to be local and my group.  We are all in our 70s, is it worth the risk going toa large event?  Haven't given much thought to the self isolation thing, watching and waiting.  Going to hit the grocery this morning for my weekly run.  Will replenish all that was used and stock up for an extra week (I keep two weeks in the pantry normally).

" Will replenish all that was used and stock up for an extra week"........good luck with that. I haven't heard of a confirmed virus within 350 miles of Amarillo....yet 2 Walmarts and Sam's had no paper products, canned beans, rice, etc.
With that said, took a short roadtrip into Oklahoma, with the '57 yesterday, 380 miles. Everything seemed pretty normal. tp in the rest stops, gas getting close to 1.80, 2.14 for the mid grade I use.

I guess it all depends on where you grow up as to how much you keep in your pantry. My wife and I both grew up in very rural areas of South  and North Dakota and our parents all ways had enough food layed in to last at least 4 months.  even though we only live 5 miles from town we still do as we were taught and have enough food to last at least 4 months.  Our swap meets and car events are not large compared to where most of you live, but they have canceled 2 of the biggest swap meets and I see were they are already canceling a few shows.  so the car activites may be light here too. We will probably have small get togethers and poker runs to keep the oil hot and tires warm.  Take care, Alvin

Yup, not a single paper product on the shelves, plenty of canned beans, no dry beans, rice and very little pasta.  No eggs, very few canned veggies, lots of frozen (which I always buy), not a single bottle of water? but plenty of beer!  Frozen pizza was empty, no wieners, no hot dog buns and just a few hamburger buns.  Kids home from school probable driving that.  I got the last pack of chicken breast, chicken for that matter.  No pork except a couple of racks of ribs but plenty of beef in all forms.  Fresh veggie and fruits were full.

I'm going to have to guess there are an awful lot of people that are full of crap to feel the need to horde TP!
