Title: forumn issues
Post by: RICH MUISE on 2020-11-18 10:13
As most of you know, we've had issues with not being able to post pics. Bill, Jeff, and I have sent messages to James and as of yet, we have had no response. Of course, my first concern is hoping everything is well with him. He may just be out of town and out of cell phone range. Yes, I am a moderator, but as most of you know, I'm an analog old-timer, so this hi-tech stuff is beyond my understanding even if I had access to the server, which I don't.
So, is there anything we can do to fix the issue? Maybe. We need to put our heads together and see if anybody here has some answers. My main question at this time is: what exactly is this "upload folder" we're being told is full? Is it just a folder that holds info temporarily while stuff is in process of being uploaded to the forum, or is it permanent storage for all things forum-related (text and pics), or permanent storage just for pics??
Maybe Jeff can find out from Ryan at the Hamb what exactly the "upload folder" is.
My thoughts are either it's a temporary holding folder that has a problem we can't do anything about, and that needs to be fixed by the host. OR (and this is where my "maybe" comes in, it's a permanent folder that we have exceeded our limits on and I can reduce by deleting old irrelevant pics.
Give me some input guys......this is our forum. My thoughts at this time are to put a temporary hold on posting pics while I go thru old threads purging irrelevant stuff. After I purge, I could try posting a pic normally to see if that helped. If it does, then at that point we'll have to make some decisions as to what can and cannot be posted. Priority, of course, will be keeping this forum functionable for '57 related stuff.

I like Rich have no idea what the heck is going on.  No idea what the "upload folder" is either.  Never had a need to learn all the "language" computer geeks (I use that term fondly) use at either work or during my time in the Navy.  While I repaired complex electronic systems including computers programming was never part of the process.

I am willing to hold posting pictures until we/he/they can get this sorted and back on track.

I visit this site using explorer, just for grins and giggles went to Chrome and tried to load a picture, no joy so I'm leaning heavy on the site has issues....

I'm of no help. On another site individuals were limited to how much space they were allowed to use for uploading pictures, I reached that max. But here it is effecting everyone so more then likely the limit is set in the software. I'm guessing the amount seemed more then enough when James set up the site but possibly it can be increased for additional $$$. Only James would know so we will hopefully hear from him soon..

Deleting pics will NOT solve the problem. Upload folders are temp folders. I suspect the issue will need to be addressed by the hosting company for the forum. So...finding out who that is, then advising them of the issues we are dealing with will be the answer. Since there IS a way around the issue that allows posting pics, this leads me to believe this is the solution.

Deleting pics that are old just takes away the foundation of our site. Maybe James will re-surface soon, or maybe we can find out who the site host is.

When I was a mod for another car site 15+ years back we had a similar issue, and the hosting company dealt with it.

not a computer guy either, but what Hugh says makes a lot a sense. We're not in a hurry though. our cars left the building 63 years ago. :003:
so hopefully James will be back with some info on how to solve the problem, In the meantime I highly encourage to use off site upload platforms. much as in Joes tutorial. They are easy to use, once you try. I think we also can assist our not so computer savvy guys as to how to use these.

ok...the info Hugh provided was what I was looking for. Thanks...........and btw, I never had any intention of deleting relevant pics. I guess we're just going to have to wait for James.

I wasn't thinking you would delete "relevant" pics...to me ALL pics are relevant LOL!!!

Can you access the background info of the site that says "who" is the website host? If so...you could shoot them a direct e-mail and let them know about the problems...and then they  might be able to pop in.

Strangely they don't have a link at the bottom of the site pages advertising themselves...at least not that I could see.

If you have access to Admin settings, I would try something like Admin -> Attachments -> Attachment settings. If that gets you to the right place, try and find the 'max size of attachment folder' setting and increase its value to something larger.
Note sure, but this may be something that you may have to purchase more disc space from the host on their server.
That is why I use an image hosting service because of the amount of pictures I post, if I used the forum site to host them, I would single handedly use all the upload space with my two threads. Just so everyone understands, NONE of my pics are uploaded to your site, they are instead, linked to another image site.

Just  my $0.02

$0.02...might be worth more like $20.00 if that is the fix...just sayin'... :006:

Nowadays almost everyone chooses to externally host images on most forums because of this reason, people like big detailed pictures these days. That's why file size is limited on most forums.
Utilizing a hosting site also gives you an Album of all your pictures. Many websites offer free services. I use Imgur; some others prefer Flickr, Google photos, Wix, Free image Sharing, ImageShack, IMGBox, DropBox, etc.

It is extremely easy, you just upload your photos to the website of choice, then grab the URL for the image and post that within your post/text.

Think I'll try that...would it make it easier then to share pics with others when I send an e-mail?

Post by: RICH MUISE on 2020-11-18 20:12
Joe, I understand what you are saying, and I know your pic size is very very small kb wise, but if what Hugh said is true for this website (being an upload temporary file ONLY), then there has to be a problem with what we have rather than needing to pay more $ for a larger file size.
I'll search what I can get into to see if there is a host name.

OK............did some looking around and found I can get into the administration center. It's midnight and I don't want to start some long involved procedure, so I'll try to get to it tomorrow. If nothing else, I know the name of the host now and found a button where I can contact them for help. So, looking promising.

Rich, Bill.. when and if you need me to make the call.I will.
This style of forum was a Hamb unit years ago.... It has been upgraded to a different unit.... saying that.... that site is a monster and monthly upgrades are needed due to the size and traffic.
I will see if I can locate James....but on FB... he is constantly in Jail

hahahaha

Well, that was a futile exercise. I cannot log on to the help center because I am not a registered administrator. I did get to online chat with one of their techs, and that ended up being the futile part. I kept telling her it was a forum wide issue with all our members, told her the error message we were getting, and she kept asking about MY computer! She eventually turned me over to what I thought was going to be one of THEIR techs, but she referred me to an non-related online geek service that answers questions about computer problems in general. I told her at least twice this wasn't an issue with my computer, but we felt was an issue on their end.
I did find out we are running on an outdated program that needs to be updated, but It's not my place to make any changes to the forum without James' approval. Besides that, I can't log on to the host's site to do it anyways.

I figured that it may be outdated and they may not support it any longer. They may force you/us to go into a newer format and we all know how well everyone likes change......

Post by: Jeff Norwell on 2020-11-19 14:57
Upgrades are a necessary evil... and if the Upgrade needs to go deep and wide... the company may not support it anymore.
Hope not.

These message groups are not cheap.

Actually, I had a few surprises. The version we are using is -16, and the newer version is -17., so we're not that far behind and it is still supported. It just takes a click on the button to add the FREE latest version. It corrects some bugs rather than being a change. As they word it, -17 is just what -16 was supposed to be, just some corrections rather than changes. As I mentioned, to add that version, one has to be logged in as an administrator.
They are working on an entirely new, soon-to-be-released version.

Excellent new Rich.... that takes away the anxiety of being outdated.Once you get into the system... I think you will have no issues

That is great news, apparently God likes us old people who hate change.    :003:

Just typed a reply, not sure where it went, so I'll try again.
I'm not sure what the great news was, basically I'm saying I cannot get into the system because I'm not authorized, so we just have to wait for James. I guess it's great news that our version is not that old.

I think tomorrow I'll try getting the host again......and hopefully get a different tech. She kept asking questions like it was an issue with my computer and referred me to an "expert" online site. called JUST ANSWERS. The first teckie I got there told me an administrator needed to increase our file allowed size, after I replied I wasn't satisfied with that answer, and explained to him why, he referred me to another teckie for a second opinion. He agreed it was a host issue.

Rich I found the same place you did (I suspect) and was denied any info or entry because of not being a moderator.  Never did get to talk to a real person, the "help chat" ( I use that loosely as well ) never responded to my questions even though they acknowledged that I was on with them????  Yup, we need to find James.....or who was he in talks with to take over the site?  He/she/they most certainly must have an idea of how/what/when things went south....

I suspect this has been suggested before, is anyone on F/B?  I am not, maybe if a member is there are you allowed to search for people?

I sent him a message a few days ago thru the facebook 57 site. Last night I was looking for someone's phone info on my Iphone and was surprised to see a listing for James on there. I don't remember putting in that info, but I don't remember a lot of things anymore. I don't think I've ever talked to him on the phone. I'll maybe wait until tomorrow (Saturday) to give that a try.
I have no clue who it was he offered the site to on facebook. pm sent

Guys.  I recall something like this happening one one of the forums I visit. The part with the upload folder.
It might have even been the HAMB many generations ago.

The thing that is not working is allowing for users to hotlink photos.

Which would mean that posting external links is somehow blocked.

Otherwise we would be able to post a link for a photo and any user can click and go to the page.

Not getting ANY notifications on threads I have marked for notifications. And every thread I post in...I have to physically request that there be notifications on each one as opposed to that being automatic.

Just throwing this out there, I do work in IT and am somewhat tech savvy. I am not familiar with how these forums work, but if we need more volunteers to help as admins I would be willing to as a thank you for all of the good advice I have gotten on here. Just let me know and I can share my contact info.

Thank you,
Andy

When I upgraded the forum software, some settings that werent there before got added, and the defaults didnt allow the pics to display properly,  I kept going over and over the attachment settings, and everything was right, so I logged back on the forum software support forum, and found a guy last week with similar problems. I used the answer they gave him him to figure it out. Compression was enabled which caused the pics to not display, so I disabled it, and fixed it. Never would have known that setting existed as it is deep in the admin pages and you have to search specifically for it to find it.

Thanks for all you do James.  I for one really appreciate all you do.  FYI, as I was typing this, this msg came into the first sentence "t :iamwithstupid:".  If something like this appears in one of my posts, know I didn't put it in there intentionally.

Likewise. How do we fix that? Is there something that I have to change in my profile stuff?

Hugh has the same problem. I just looked at my forum info, and under forum profile, there is a drop-down with "NOTIFICATIONS" where you select how you want to be notified. I Don't know if it'll work for what you want, but try it.

Picture distortion....Guys, until James can get into the program, we need to restrict our picture posting to the old limitations of 4 pic max per post and 4k mb max per 4 pics. We need to resize pics before posting so they are under 1k per pic.

Well over a month ago after seeing that my original notification preferences had been removed with this new thing I updated them in order to get the email notifications that I used to get.
Still not getting anything. The last one that's still in my email is dated April 5th 2022.
Can anyone help me out here? Please! Do I need to do something else?
If anyone has an answer to this problem maybe a PM to me will get through but considering how this new thing seems to be working tonight I'm not gonna count on it. : (
HELP!

I've re-set my notifications several times & I still don't get any email notices. That makes it very difficult to participate here, so much so that without any help from the powers that be here I've about given up on it.

Here is a couple of errors that maybe the sight administrator can look into.  From the home page, if you click on "contact", you get the following:  [contact-form-7 id="705″ title="Contact form 1″]  Not sure how I would use that to contact anyone.

Secondly, the link for Ford Road Parts is broken.  His web address is:  https://www.frpartsstore.com/  Maybe the link can be fixed.  Thanks!!
