Title: T-85 overdrive Transmission
Post by: BP57CUSTOM on 2023-04-03 17:14
I'm looking for a complete Borg Warner T-85c overdrive transmission setup for my 57 custom 300. I'm currently running a manual transmission. Near northwest Georgia or northeast Al. In good condition ready to use.
Thanks
Barry

I saw this blog... scroll down and the guy writes about a friend who has a '57 specific T-85/OD. Just a lead, you never know.

Just another possible choice.. I used a later model from a 61, just had to change the clutch disc to a 23 spline. It used the bigger yoke and had to adapt U joint to drive shaft. Also had to swap shift arms from original 3 speed.

Lynn, thanks for the reply. I wasn't aware that the t-bird and car had different tail shafts, I knew the trucks did. The t-85's fitment gets pretty complicated. My current transmission is a 63 toploader 3 speed which works great but with my 3.70 rear gears I'm turning more rpm's than I like on long trips. I may be better off to just change to a 3.27 or something rear gears? Well have a nice rainy day. Barry

Did your t-85 come from a galaxie or other full size car? Was it behind a Fe engine. Thanks Barry

Yes, it came out of a friends 61 Starliner, 390/401hp FE. I traded a toploader 4spd for it.

I'm sorry I don't recall the numbers and thee only picture I have is too blurry to read when enlarged. I just remember the R11 on the tail shaft.

T86 with OD will work also if not abused too much. I have a couple (maybe one is sold now, not sure..), but am too far away MN. Have several of the T85 OD's also, but one is a 56 Merc with the long tail and the other 3 are all 58-62 23 spline version.

Alright...call me crazy...you two work out a deal...and I'll try to get it from one to the other. Leaving on a road trip here before long. Can adjust to make GA or somewhere near to deliver. Minnesota pick-up not an issue.
Leaving Branson MO to go to Montana first, then heading to CT after that. You guys figure out a deal. Trip starts on the 15th.
