Title: need windshield glass measurement.
Post by: RICH MUISE on 2015-03-24 21:03
I want to double check the height of the windshield I got 6 or 8 years ago before I go for the second attempt at installation. If anyone has their windshield out of the car, could you run a tape measure (along the glass) for the height of the glass for me. Mine is right at 16". TIA

Rich
The best that I can come up with is 17 1/4 inches.  Since my windshield is in place, I had to slip cards in under the rubber to the a total of 3/4''  My measurement on the glass between the rubber is 16 1/2 .   Add the two together and I get 17 1/4 if my math is correct.
Hopefully someone who has his windshield out will no doubt come up with a more accurate measurement.

Rich, the glass is 17-5/16 tall in the middle ( the body opening is 3/8 less). I just pulled the windshield today. Only to get your measurement... :003:
( only joking but I DID pull the windshield today, by incidence read your topic) this is the wagon and Custom tall windshield. if your windshield measures 16" it probably is the Fairlane type.

Thanks for the confirmation, guys. I appreciate the time and effort. That is what classic city auto told me, so it makes me feel better about ordering a second windshield. Now I just need to find someone near home that needs a Fairlane windshield.

If I lived closer I would sure come pick it up. My windshield has a couple of pretty good chips in it. Its also going to be a while before I will need one. :burnout:

That's mine then, I'll take it. I need side and front glass, my back glass is fine.
What do you want, and would it be possible to meet 1/2 way?
Larry

After looking Thor, is closer than I am, so if meeting the 1/2 way was an option, I would defer to him.
The 1/2 might not even be optional, I understand, and not a problem.

I'd like to get 200 for it. I really don't want to get into packing and shipping, and a friend just told me he paid 184. to have a windshield shipped last month.
Acrylic man.....Yep, Houston to Amarillo is a long way,...10 hrs... however, any chance you're planning on attending the Pate swap meet in Fort Worth next month?

I originally paid about 550 including shipping  for the windshield, but there are cheaper sources now than there was then. It will have some residue from the sealant around the egdes, but other than that, new condition.
Now the next thing....Yes, I have a Fairlane windshield, but I need to check on whether or not it makes a difference on which Fairlane. I don't know if the Fairlane hardtops and Fairlane sedans were the same windshield....my guess is they are different. The height and the angle of the post may be different
I'm going to go check see if there is a number on it I hadn't noticed before.

update...there are some numbers on it, I'll do some research and find out what it fits...hopefully the numbers don't come up for a Custom, and they just made it wrong.

My windshields not out yet, if you'll check on the different on the 2 Fairlane I'll try to pull mine out and get the measurements see if they match yours.

April30-may3 It's at the Texas Motor Speedway North of Forth Worth on I35west
www.pateswapmeet.com
One of the biggest swap meets in the country...One would be hard pressed to see everything in one day. I go every year...about 6 hours of walking is all I can take anymore, but it sure gives me my fill of swap meets for a while. They'll be about 10-12 "streets" about a mile long.
The windshield was made by AGP (American Glass Products). I sent them an email, and hopefully will get a response. I'll try calling them tommorrow, they were not answering today, maybe just too late.
It looks like the AGP part number is D834 TR GS-13
If we can't get any answers that way, I can trace the outline of the windshield at the end and mail it so you can check the fit for the right a pillar angle/shape . These windshields, btw, install/remove with the stainless attached except for the two lower corner pieces which will reveal screws after they are removed.

AGP maybe Auto Glass Peru, I think they bought all the old LOF ( Libby Owen Ford ) molds from what I can remember being told by a glass guy I use to know who replaced the windshield in my 60 truck..

I don't think so. Actually at the ends it was pretty close...at least not the inch that it was in the center, so the rubber could easily stretch to fit the Custom

If I ever do a roof mod on a Custom, it will be to remove it entirely. I still vision a Custom soft top convertible.

Bill, I don't want to be reading between the lines here. I knew all the Custom platformed models were the same..Ranchero, wagons, Custom sedans,Custom 300 sedans, etc.
I have a hard time keeping the Fairlane based models straight, and I know all Fairlanes are not 500's. Aside from the two convertibles, are you saying all Fairlanes regardless of being a hartop or a sedan use the same windshield?

Note their logo is same as on the windshield. Apparently worldwide, including Peru.

If you talk to them can you ask if the windshields for the 57 are made in Peru? I think that is where my truck windshield came from and I was told it was high quality..

Rich,
I would like to drive down and pick up the windshield if I can make arrangements with you. I know for sure that the Fairlane and Fairlane 500's (long wheel base) use the same windshield in both 1957 and 1958 (maybe 1959 too?). The Ranchero, Wagons, Custom Sedans, Custom 300 sedans (short wheel base) use the taller windshield. At one time I had picked up a Custom 300 windshield and better stainless. After researching I found out the same thing you are experiencing. The 300 windshield was too tall. I have since sold the 300 windshield so I can't help you out there.  :-\

Thor...I came back to do a post asking if we (Acrylic Man and I) were jumping the gun on you as you were the first to jump in, but  your previous post was a little confusing. I guess you just answered that.
Larry:....I should have clarified what Thor was saying before we made any arrangements, I apologize for that. I honestly was confused as to what he was saying, but I also think it would be right for him to have first shot at it since I never confirmed he was out of it.
Sorry for the confusion.

Well, I guess we're all online now. Thanks, Larry...you'll be next in line
Also, I did confirm what Thor and Bill said. The same part number is used for 2 and 4 door Fairlane hardtops and sedans.
Thor...I'm retired (or retarded)..so my calender is open. Just let me know when would be convienient for you. I'll PM you my address and phone #'s after we set a date/time.

I'm sorry. I re-read my first post and it definitely was confusing. I was trying to imply it might be a couple weeks before I can make arrangements to come get it. I really do want it. Is this windshield a clear one, green one, or the one with the shade across the top?
Title: Re: need windshield glass measurement.
Post by: RICH MUISE on 2015-03-26 09:19
Even though the markings on it label it as tinted, for all practical purposes, I'd call it clear....there is no visable tinting to it that I can detect. No top shading ( I hate driving with those). I sent you a pm with my info.

The 59 is such a different beast in so many ways that am going to guess, and its only a guess, that the glass is different.

I was wrong about the 1959's. I did some more looking, and as you believed Zap, its completely different. Not sure where in the past that I came up with that.

Thanks for the link to the YouTube video, Thor. I think I'll give their caulking method a shot...I've already got the material in my shop as I use it on many things. Other than the caulking though, it's pretty much what we were doing earlier this  week when I found out I had the wrong windshield.

Guys, a link to the video. It's a good video on installation of windshields. It's for a trifive Chevy, but their seal/stainless arrangement is very similar to ours.

Larry....Thor is driving down to Amarillo next Friday unless things change. I'll keep you posted if things do change.
I found out Thor has been planning a 4.6 dohc install for a while now, so we've got lots to talk about and see/show when he gets here.

I'm still trying to make it to Fort Worth for the Pate swap meet. Do you have anybody you can recommend that specializing in our 57 stuff? Larry
Title: Re: need windshield glass measurement.
Post by: RICH MUISE on 2015-04-01 12:33
Honestly you will probably not find too much stuff there '57 specific....but who knows. Building a fifties Ford unfortunatly(?) isn't like building a Chevy with parts vendors everywhere. Classic Auto Parts from OK City will have a big Ford  booth there, but not too much '57 stuff...mostly older. You can order stuff from them and have it delivered to the swap meet to save freight. Dennis Carpenter will have a booth there, but mainly handing out catalogs, ect. The Bumper Shop (Chrome shop not to be confused with "the Bumper Boys) probably will have some '57 bumpers and posibly a grille or two. The stuff from the bumper shop may/may not be good, so look closely. I looked at bumpers they had there for 3 years running before I found one I was really happy with. Same with the grille. The swap meet is a great place to buy supplies!!and other non model specific stuff. Bring some type of a cart or wagon and some cold drinks, comfortable shoes and a hat. You'll be walking at least 10 miles unless you want to spend 90 bucks to rent a scooter. Be there early and plan on spending the day. Don't forget to check out the car coral..usually a hundred or so cars there.
I'm currently planning on driving down Thursday night with a friend and being there Friday. We should meet up if it works out for the right day.

I got my back window installed last night. It fit like a glove. I kept thinking about Jay saying he did them alone, so after diner I was thinking what the heck...and it was in in about an hour. The 3M strip-caulk worked great(video referenced earlier). Easy, and absolutly no mess on the headliner or anywhere else. I was also pleased with the 3M butyl sealant I used between the glass and the rubber. That stuff does not set up much at all, even after 2 days. That actually works great because you can still shift the seal around on the glass for better conformity. I need to go back and clean up the glass where the stuff oozed from handling, but that's a plastic scrapper and mineral spirits so no biggie. The glass I had gotten about 3 years ago from autocityclassic. It's fit made me feel better about the windshield on it's way from them.
Anyway, it's nice to see shiney grey tinted glass in that hole that's been empty for so many years. After I get it cleaned up and the top ss trim installed, I'll get the fixed rear side windows finally installed permanently.

Yeah, I was getting anxious since someone  posted about trouble with autocityclassic glass on a non 57 project. Thor, the corner gaps we were looking at i my shop pretty much disappeared once the rubber was pulled in place over the window flange.
Bill...I forgot to mention I used the Dupont teflon/alcohol as the lubricant instead of soapy water. It was the stuff you had recommended for the cable lubrication. Gotta pick up another bottle before I get to the windshield. It worked pretty well here also.

Forgot...Bill, yep...stupid easy. I had the back side glass out on both sides so very little was done from the inside until the seal was pulled over the flange past the upper corners.
Larry/Acrylic Man...I sent a pm about the windshield....did you get it?

I have been working on the side back glass. I had converted the roll-ups to the stationary windows ala business coupe. This has been a total exercise in frustration trying to get the seals to work correctly. What I should have done when I had the glass made was gone to 3/8 thick. The seals are just made wrong...too wide of a glass channel...as far as I'm concerned. Other guys in the past have had the same problem. I cannot get the inside to conform to the glass even after adding a rubber glass edging for shower doors I had picked up from a glass shop. Anyway, I got them put in as best I could yesterday, with messy butyl caulking. They look ok from the outside. I'm going to move on and leave them as is for now, and add them to my list of things to redo after the car is complete. In the future, I will either convert it back to rollups or have 3/8 thick tempered glass made.
