Station wagon rearends ?

In the 60s-70s it seems that every model A had a 57 wagon rear under it. I realize that the smooth cover was/is part of the draw. But the usually also mention width as part of the equation for choice. Was told several times that they were narrower than the rest by an inch per side to fit with the larger/wider wagon rims.

Anyone know if there is any truth to that?

all the 57-59 diffs are the same width.the s/w diff had bigger wheel bearings and a little bigger [thicker]axle
