clutch pedal retainer

What is used to retain the clutch pedal?  I was examining my clutch brake pedals and noticed that the retainer used wasn't the "hairpin" style fastener I was expecting and the wavy washers were askew.  I want to address this issue before installation of the support and dash.  Like most, I don't want to address the issue while lying on the floor working overhead.  Thanks.
