Title: -74 360/ 390 truck into 57 Ranch wagon
Post by: Lono on 2010-08-12 14:54
I bought a ranch wagon with a stock 6 cylinder / speed overdrive thats doa.
I was given a 74 truck if I want it thats running a 352/ auto.

I was wondering about the swap ( I'm going to start it in a couple months, just now gearing up for it), would that motor bolt up to the standard tranny or should I be looking at installing teh auto at the same time?

As for the motor itself, will I be looking at new motor mounts and can i use  the stock exaust headers or do I need to switch out?

thanks guys.

Lono,  The 352 F.E. came as an option in '58,so go down to your local parts house and ask for engine mounts/tranny mount(assuming the trans from the truck is a C-6) and bolt it right in! You'll have to replace the 6 cylinder radiator as the inlet/outlet will be wrong(measure the trucks rad. for fit) and some rubber gas hose as the 6 cyl. runs down passenger side.the stock 352 exhaust manifolds will work--check the trucks driveshaft f or length, other wise use the front yoke on the '57 shaft and you may have to change out the speedo gear and check the oil pan on the 352(front sump or rear). There's enough aftermarket suppliers for parts to get 350/400 hp out of the 352 and still be a reliable daily driver.  KID

Hey Lono, just read your other post about your other '57's and seeing as how you have too many of them and you want to get that retractable and I'd like to save you the countless hours of aggrevation on that drive train swap! Soooo, how about  I take that Ranch Wagon off your hands("Picture"--Ranch Wagon cruising along the beach on a sunny day following Pacific Coast Highway here in SoCal,listening to surf tunes on the stereo!) What say bro ??? LOL  ---(You have a great bunch of '57's and welcome to the site!   KID

if it is the original engine it would be a 360 or a 390.check the serial number or the engine ID to see what size it is

Started making room in the garage yesterday for a motor re and re. Moved the fairlain into its winter storage spot at the house ( but will have it  out a few more times this year).

This morning I went down and lubed up the cylinders in the truck. If the owner can fit it in, we'll drive it straight up my driveway this weekend and I'll pull the motor/ tranny. He wants the rest back for selling for scrap later on.  Cant complain about that.

Motor turns free by hand and was on the road daily until '99 when he parked it. He had rebuilt the motor in 97 so he thinks he has maybe 10, 000 on the rebuild.

Wonder how this is going to fit now I know its not a 352.

LONO, THE EASIEST THING WOULD BE TO ORDER MOTOR MOUNTS FOR A 1958 FORD CAR WITH A 332 MOTOR. STILL CAN GET FROM ANY PARTS HOUSE. TOM

still waiting.
In the mean time, the oil pan... I'm guessing I'll need a front sump?

A battery, 2 gallons of fresh fuel, a can of ether and it was running in 10 minutes.

A little rev and a mouse nest blew out the muffler. then the long 1000 feet up my driveway to the shop. I'll gunk the motor and give it a quick scrub before pulling it next week.

I pulled the motor on sunday and I'll give it a little scrubbing before hoising it back in the air and into the 57 engine bay.

I know I have to change the motor mounts and the exaust maifold but this one looks a lot like the 390 in the fairlane.

a new use for styro... great for taking impressions where you cant get your eye balls.

the fairlane casting number that is on the manifold is c32e9431b -
the truck: D2Te 9431AA - I cant see the difference but there must be something cause i'm told they have to be changed out to clear the steering box.

Alas, caused there wasnt any exaust leak.

the exhaust manifold you need has a flat spot by the back two ports to clear the steering box.was used on full size fords 58 to about 65 or 67.with the 57 steering box the clearance will be tighter than a 58 box.you all so need to change the oil filter adapter to one that points down.i have been told a manifold from a 390 GT 66 to about 70 will also fit,if you have the right heads.hope this helps.

I think the GT manifolds are staggered bolt pattern. You've got
the straight horizontal ones in looks like.

a lot more scrubbing today on the motor with 10,000 miles post rebuild. Me thinks the miles might be a bit off by 60,000 or so from all the goop on it. Just glad I had the chance to drive it before I pulled it.

She cleaned up well enough for installing it.

But as always, I changed out the motor mounts for 332 motor mounts and thought I'd take a chance to see if it would clear the steering box, but when you think things will go smoothly you know what can happen...

IT FIT!!!! IT CLEARED THE STEERING BOX and there's plenty of room for exaust work...  I didnt have to change the exaust manifold! It dropped in like it was made for it.

Now I can move it into place by the work bench and start bolting it all together.
I do need to check out the tranny mount, but thats tomorrow.

Nice work Lono!  Did the oil filter adapter work also or did you have to change it out for the one that points down?

Did your engine have 3 bolt holes for the mount? If so what mount did you use? Any pics of the mount installed?

I have that car now, the mount has two bolts to the block and one to the chassis mount.  58 Ford 332 engine mounts were stock, same as the 292/312 mounts turned around.

The 57 I have has two bolt holes on the frame. Do you just use one of them? Did the holes on the engine line up with the mount?
