Title: 80s 4-speed OD
Post by: Ford Blue blood on 2009-10-02 09:45
OK anyone know it the floor shifted 4-speed (3 and OD) found in light trucks in the 80s (six with a manual in a 89) will bolt up to the 61 3-speed manual bell housing?  What the heck was it called?  I believe it was the same as the 4-speed top loader style case but cast in aluminum.  My 61 Unibody has a 3:70 and the 292 will spin pretty good on the freeway!  Thanks, Bill

Try---(www.davidkeemotorsports.com) on his home page on leftside you should see a list of topics--click on i.d.--new list comes up--then click on "impostures" will bring up topic on 3 spd/od that resembles a toploader 4-spd with top cover--I'm running this trans behind my y-block,has "2" bolt patterns on each ear of trans and bolts right up--running a Hurst shifter with a 4-speed shift ball(shish-our secret--who's to know) and iv'e dump the clutch on it and grabbed 2nd gear several times in a 3600 lb car an haven't blown her yet!  KID

Kid, thanks for the link, will go look.  I too like the tranny....put one behind a 390 GT in a 48 1/2 ton with a 4:88.  1st was too low but 2nd and 3rd pulled like crazy and the OD gave a very comfortable cruise.  I ran an off the shelf 4-speed ball....reverse was the wrong way but the price was right!

Had one in my f-100. Not the strongest, but were in early mustangs. Based on top-loader.
