thanks everybody,
the stopping thing crossed my mind since the idle speed was way up there, but the brakes seemed to be fairly solid.
it only ran a minute or so because I didn't have the radiator in it, just wanted to make sure it'd start and move before I take it further apart.  but I was glad it didn't smoke even in that short time running,  it did blow about a foot and a half of wasp nests out the pipe though.
and thanks djfordmanjack, although the neighbors may have differing opinions from time to time.

congratulations. That's an accomplishment.  Mine hasn't moved under it's own power since 1966 and probably won't for quite some time.
