 :-\  It is a retaining ring but I can't remember to what. I lost my mind in my last move...no idea where it went to.  :cussing:

Ah crapola...yep. Been a long, Long, LONG time since I built an engine...1978 if memory serves! Guess I will  now move to the back of the room and face the corner with a dunce cap on!  :notallthere:

  Gasman pretty much got it. It's an aftermarket piece that goes in behind the the spacer part of the oil ring, I think they used call them oil ring expanders. I found them in my 429 a couple years back.

It bolts to the crankshaft with the flex plate between it and the end of the crankshaft?

 Ding ding ding, we have a winner! Yes, it spreads the load out on the flexplate when it's bolted down.
