I wound up having to get my Hi-Level horn replacement from Bud Kohler in Hesperia, CA.  It cost about $140, but was well worth it.  The Hi side wouldn't work but the Lo-Level side did.  Now that both are working, the horn, when honked, sounds like it's supposed to.  You will have to determine whether you need to replace the hi or low level side, as each gives a different sound.

140. for one horn? whoooow! nos?
Chero...let me know for sure which one you need..I've got my old ones with brackets that as far as I know worked when I pulled them off. I've already bought new aftermarket horns, so wasn't planning on using the old ones. I'm not sure if I'll be able to tell them apart hi or lo. let me know and I'll look for them...if I have them, you won't beat the price, but you'll need to clean them up.

I know they usually are but haven't been able to find it on these.  Not even sure they are '57 horns.  Might be '58s but would think they would then look like '57s & they don't.  The horn part is much shorter. Might even be something else.  Maybe if I get the major rust off of 'em I can find the high/low marks.

Ok, you shamed me into looking again. Finally found the markings hiding under the corrosion.  Right here, Ford Blue B.

Maybe I was wrong about the horn part being shorter.  Looked at another horn that I have mounted on my old van that I'm pretty sure came from a '57 Ford.  Only had one though.  It looked about the same. Forgot that it was a Spartan brand horn.  These are just labeled 12 volts on that side.
Do these look like '57 horns to anybody?

They both seem to work now but don't sound right to me.  Sound kind of flat.  No adjustment screw that I usually find on horns either.  :dontknow:

Tom - I just found in my stash of parts a lo horn that works well.  It is an Autolite horn that is marked low.  Two small dents in the dome.  This horn fits on the driver's side.  Willing to trade for a good hi horn.

Thanks

The 57 horns have a longer bracket and the horn itself is longer.

well I just spent an hour looking thru my stuff and guess what...I only found one horn!! I know the manual says a hi and lo horn, but I'm wondering, since so many of us seem to have one horn, if some only came with one horn?? Or maybe there's a one horn bandit around.
There are no markings on mine, so I don't know if it's hi or lo, but size wise, it's more like  what Chero was describing, and definetly not like in Tom's pics. I did find a yellow 12v paint stamping on it. I hooked up a power source and all I can tell you is it's loud...I'm guessing more of a low pitch, but hard to tell without having two to compare.
Chero, maybe you can tell from the direction of the bracket if it's the one you need.

Rich,
That is indeed the horn and bracket I am looking for.  Would you be willing to part with it?  If so, please let me know how much.
Thank you very much, Roger

There are 2 different style horns for the 57's It would look like the longer horns like Rich, has came of western cars.
Us flat landers call the long one's mountain horns. Don't know how that started!
Both style horns should be marked Hi-Lo

Gary I'm going to guess there was a real mixed bag with those horns.  My San Diego built Ranchero (early) has the little short curled up horns and my Louiseville built Retractable has the long straight horns.  The St. Louise (or K.C.?) built 300 I parted had the short ones too.....go figure

Yes, that is what I remember.
Looked like this one that Rich M posted.

I had 2 of those that worked & sounded great but after sitting idle for years one quit & I couldn?t make it work.  Now I/m not sure where they are.  Probably stored them in an old van that/s now out through the snow.

As I said I have 2 that work.  Don/t look like Rich M's.  I do think they came off the '[[''58 Edsel front clip that's on my Ranchero.  I will probably have to use them.  The PO never did, never even mounted them.  If I ever find the '57 horns I will let you know if I have a hi that works.
The 58 Edsel service manual that came with my Rancheo has a pic of a horn that looks like the ones I posted.  Has a short horn.  Pry off the the dome & the tone adjuster is under it.

Ford Blue blood, I see you have a '58 Edsel.  Can you tell me what direction the horn faces  Is the loud end down or towards the center of the car?  I only assume it makes a difference on how well they can be heard.  If you have them pix would be great.  (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/TomIII/smilies/Evil.gif)

Tom can't see them but feeling them they are the little wound up style and point down and a little to the center of the car.  One on each side of the center grill at the outboard edge of the radiator.  Yes they are quite loud and make todays horns sound like peddle cars..... :003:

Thanks.  Looks like the ones I posted in reply #10 have the right brackets & will fit right.  You must have the same ones.  Pry the 4 tabs up on the 'dome' & the tone adjustment is underneath.  Not quite the way it says in the manual.
Yeah, they sound like a car horn should.  Not wimpy little beep-beep things.

Found a pair of those.  One works, one don't.  Working one sounds like a low.  Can't find any Hi-Lo markings.
Can you tell us where they are?

Think the second horn was optional on Customs.
Ever seen the "mountain horns" ? They are about a foot long and super loud.

Wait, I thought you needed a Hi horn?  I do have a working pair but wouldn't mind having a working set for another vehicle.  But if somebody else really needs it I can pass.
I have one small lo that works & a hi that don't.  If you're really sure you want to send it I would be more than happy to pay the shipping.
Is your hi the small one?  That would fit in a USPS $12.35 medium flat rate box.  Have to take the brackets off a long horn to fit in the medium flat rate box.

Tom I found a good Hi horn on Ebay and bought it.  Works good.  I will post my lo horn in the For Sale section for free and see if anyone needs it.  If I don' t get a taker in one week then it is yours for free.  I will even ship it to you for free.  Do you happen to know anyone that has a Ranchero with stock bumper jack and spare tire installed behind the seat?  I have been looking high and lw fr either a picture/diagram or description as to how they are installed.  Thanks.

Several people here must have a 57 owners manual.  I did a search & see that Jim Nolan does have one. Maybe you could send him a PM & see if he will post a pic here.  There are some 57 owners manuals on ebay.

Bill...I found the factory diagram for the Ranchero spare mounting. It is in the Body, trim and sealant manual. It also has the wagon diagram (and yes, there is a spring on that setup) I'll try to scan them and get them posted before I leave tommorrow. If not, I'll post them saturday.

Thanks, Bill, but no sense in wasting your time & money.  I want to get a high, not a low.  ;)
You should just hang on to it for now, somebody will need it sooner or later.  If it comes all the way up here it may never make it back down there.  I'd just keep it 'till I die & someone will throw it away.   :(
