door lock cover fix

Has anyone ever replaced the spring for the door lock cover? I have the spring but I'm not sure how the cover detaches from the lock cylinder. Does it just pop out with a small screwdiver or do you have to remove the entire lock cylinder from the door to gain access to the back of it?

Remove the lock cylinder.  Its secured by a springy horseshoe clip adjacent to the lock under the weatherstrip.  Its been a while but I think the spring actually holds the cover in some manner.

So when I insert the lock cylinder back in the door, will the operating lever reconnect to the lock linkage inside the door? In other words, I don't have to touch any of the other lock linkages inside the door to reconnect the lock cylinder?
