I'm replacing a generic ignition switch with an original.Question, where does switch latch on to? What holds switch in place? Help!

Ford Blue blood

The dash bezzle holds the switch.  There is a spring that goes between the dash and the switch body.  Put the switch and the spring in place, the bezzle is in place, push until it bottoms then twist the switch (don't remember CW or CCW) and it and the bezzle will lock up.  Play with the switch and bezzle off the car before so you can get an idea how it works.  I would put up a copy of the manual picture but my books went with the Ranchero when I sold it.....

To remove the switch push the switch from under the dash with your other hand holding the bezel from the front compressing the spring. The bezel should loosen up. You then rotate the bezel 1/4 turn CCW. You can then remove the bezel and the switch. Here is the pic from the manual (not much help).

Good idea to disconnect the battery
