Is there a way to test a heater fan motor when out of the car? I am going to dig into the heater system soon and just want to see if it runs or I need a new one.

Thanks,

Yes, just put power to the orange wire, and ground the negative wire , on a car battery. It is actually quite impressive how much torque those little motors have, and how much air the "squirrel cage" can produce, so hang on tightly to it.
