Just a heads up! If any one is interested in rebuilding an original steering box and wants to replaced worm gear (don't see why not). I was able to press worm gear out with no problems, but getting the new one in it was a different story. Tolerances are so tight between both that I had to press new worm out and re-install. If any one is replacing gear I would recommend getting a small file to clean out burs on the original shaft (were worm gear goes thru) and use emery cloth to clean shaft circumference. Once I clean shaft I hammered it in!. Sounds brutal ,but I preferred then heating worm gear out.

The new worms are so tight that the lands for the press fit, actually broached my steering shaft. I had to carefully file the shaft as you did. I heated it and finished it off with a 5lb shot hammer. Having said that.....after pressing it on and off several times, the last sock of the hammer (out of frustration) bowed my steering shaft. Crap. I could not find a press in my area that the shaft would fit in. All were about 4 inches too short.
