Made my own "Old Ford Pic"; I picked up this 221 cu. in. (21 stud) flathead today for short money. It appears to be a truck motor, but was supposedly rebuilt 20 years or so ago and has been sitting in this guys garage. Has a replacement clutch and pressure plate on it and turns over, so I took a chance.

The intake, exhaust manifolds and distributer were off an the ports stuffed with rags. It looked pretty clean inside and the oil was clean also. I know that doesn't mean much, but for a few bucks, I figured I couldn't get hurt too bad.







When I was fourteen years old, I was amazed at how unintelligent my father was. By the time I turned twenty-one, I was astounded at how much he had learned in the last seven years!

Pretty cool find, hope it runs well. In the pictures it looks rather small, is it a V8 60 engine? Or just my eyes playing tricks?
1959 Meteor 2 door sedan , 428 Cobra Jet 4 speed. Been drag racing Fords (mostly FEs) 47 years and counting.
Previous 50s Fords include 57 Custom 4 door, 2 57 Ford Sedan Deliveries, 59  Country Sedan, and as a 9 year old, fell in love with the family 58 2 door Ranch Wagon.

Your engine would be 37 thru 41.  Flatheads prior to 37 had high mount water pumps in the heads.  Also babbit main bearings as I recall.

I wasn't sure, because everything I had read said that 1932-1937 had 21 stud heads and 1938-1941 had 24 stud heads. I knew that the 221 had head mounted water pumps up until 1936 and that this was a 1937 because of the block mounted water pumps and that it the steel heads and dual groove pulleys made it the truck motor, which I think was 7.50:1 compression, rather than 6.12:1.
I guess I just assumed 1932-37 221 cu. in. 21 stud was one series and 1938-41 221 cu. in. 24 stud was another series.

Actually they were 21 stud until the 59AB after the war, which are 24 stud as are 8BAs and all 239s and 254s.  Tom.
