question for a friend regarding the play on a 56 fairlane. He's removed the manual steering box to take the body off the chasis and now it's time to put it back together. The question is how much play should he have? I know I have quite a bit on my 57 when the wheels are straight, but with the broken leg I can't dig up the chilton or measure the steering wheel. I tried to do a search but no luck.

Ideally none, but these cars are 50+ so how much are you willing to put up with? You can try to adjust the play, crack the nut loose on the stud, screw the stud down a bit and re-tighten the nut. You have to be carefull, you can bind up the box by over adjustment. I just came in from the shop, my 58 had a 57 box in it, I swapped the box and column. I wanted to start a picture post, but I was greasy and p.o'd. So it didn't happen.Mark
