I had my engine rebuilt & my rear main retainer has always leaked, but I just notice the rear main retainer is not flush on the bottom of the engine were head bolts of the rear main are tighten up an touch the oil pan. Not sure why the mechanic that rebuilt engine did that or retainer was already like that. Does any one have any suggestions?

This is a guess as to why... If the engine was ever aligned bored, the crank bearing caps could have been machined on the block mating surface to make the resulting crank bore smaller  than original so that it could have been restored to original spec? Maybe silicone sealer would fill that gap?

I'm not sure I understand the problem. Are you saying the seal retainer is sitting higher then the surface of the block? If thats the problem this can happen if lock washers were used on the main bearing cap bolts. All main bearing caps use lock washers EXCEPT the rear one..

Not on any Y block that I have seen. Do you have a picture of yours?

Would anyone happen to know where I can get a new rear main retainer? In the past Ebay would sell them, but now I'm not sure where to get them. I will look into removing the old one and replace it. Also, would any one know the dimensions of the rear main retainer? Mainly how tall to have an idea on what I have.

Thank you. Would that be for a 292 Y block right?
