Title: Engine Swap in 5 days ...
Post by: Kai on 2020-01-26 23:15
We have been driving our 57 Wagon now for 3 years and did 13,000mls on country roads only. It's been great fun, but the 312 is so tired that we are now planning to swap it out and put a 302 in.

Since I am planning all this with the car being 4,398mls away (in a straight line) I need all the help I get get to select the right parts. OK, let's get started.

1. The engine will be a turn-key 302 SBF from BluePrint and I will be using their front kit that includes pulleys, brackets and a 100amp alternator. The P/N for that is BPP302FDE2 and it includes a water pump with driver side inlet.

2. The engine mount. I was referred to Butch?s Cool Stuff and their SBF in ex-V8 57-59 Ford kit looks just like what I need. Anyone here used this kit? [url]https://butchscoolstuff.com/57-59-ford-original-v8-cars-mercury-sb-ford-engine-mount-kit-2507cpb//url]

... more questions to come ... Thanx in advance for helping me ...

Kai

I believe someone here has used an off the shelf motor mount for the 302 to 57 chassis.  I used off the shelf mounts for my 351C install.  They are the same mounts that were used on the small block series.  I will get out my invoices and try to locate the part number for them.

I used his motor mounts in my ranchero with a 351W, worked out perfectly.

I thought the mounts for a 64/63 289 were what was needed.  I may be wrong though.  Here's a link:

There is a lot of reading there.  I hope you find something useful.

That's them Terry!  Just could not pull that one up!  Perfect for the front sump small block.  If using a 351C the deeper oil pan requires a spacer to get the pan off the cross member.  I used a 3/4" spacer as I had them, 3/8" would do the trick.

Don't know if that helps, Kai. this is the 69 351W that was in my 57 Del Rio Wagon. it appears to have stock SBF motor mounts and they were directly bolted to the 57 chassis. The motor mounts were a little tired so thats why the oil pan was slightly rubbing on the 57 crossmember. Like Bill said, if I were reinstalling that engine I would most probably use thin spacers, like 1/4" thick along with new motor mounts. In the pic you can also see the 1971 exh. manifold to clear the steering gearbox/column.

you can also see that my installation has a driver side water pump inlet (lower) and thermostat housing goes to pssgr side , which is correct for a factory 1957 V8 radiator.

The SBF motor mounts like those shown in Gunther's pix are the very same ones used for the SBFs in my 1969-'74 Econolines & I think my '71 Bronco.
I assume that Ford used those mounts for many of the various Ford models that used the SBF V8 for many years.
The point is that you don't have to look as far back as '63 or '64 those mounts.  351W mounts are the same as 302s.
A semi-random search shows that these mounts were used on Broncos to at least 1996.

The Summit mounts have the anti-separation rivet...a good thing.  I also added spacers between block and mount.  I used Moroso oil pan but the Canton would have fit better.  Hedman mid-length headers for 1st gen Mustang.
