Curious Jeff, what cam are you running in the 428?
Seeing it has adjustable rockers I hope it's a solid lifter cam, but some people use them with a hydraulic. I use a factory 427 solid in my 390, I like solid lifters  :003:

Yes Jim..solid lift cam....Adjustable rockers and the upper valve train is squared away with them retaining pieces on the rocker assembly.

I have to agree Bill.....To be honest and frank...I really wanted a 406...but after chasing the dogs tail, being disappointed.I stayed with the mighty 428.I am very happy.and as we know...for out and out performance....a single Holley with the right intake would give more power...but,I want a street car where torque is more important.

Lynn, the cam is a Crane.....523 lift,227 duration... nothing crazy....solid lift with adjustable rockers.
I admit I knew very little about these Ford engines...(Well all Fords) but after being here and listening to guys like you,Pat,Jay,James,Tom,,Jim,etc,etc,etc....I have learned a ton.The gentleman doing this is a all out Ford man and FE'S are his thing.....Don is great and Gary J. on here was instrumental in getting me together with Don(the engine fellow)....
P.S.---- Gary J..... saw your 427.....Ooooooo wee..... wow.she is a Beaut!

Don has broke the engine in,and had it running for a few days on his Dyno......Re-jetted the carbs as they were a tad rich..... engine runs and starts on the first key....I am pleased.

I want to run older steel stamp Baldies on this engine...but I may have to come up with a PVC system.....I just like valve covers with no PVC,breathers or oil fills...... but If I run the original Merc canted covers..I am good with that too.The engine will be black..... Not Ford corporate blue.

I like those rocker shaft end supports, I've thought about using them but haven't got around to it yet. I miss my tri-power and wish I hadn't sold it but at the time I was running the engine ( destroked 428 ) in my 66 F250 with a 4.10 rear end and it was a daily driver and 4 mpg was killing me  :005: but it left many Chebby hot rods wondering how they got beat by a 3/4 ton truck  :003:

As for exhaust..I still have these old 2 piece Hedman headers... which were specifically made for a FE install for a 57-59 swap(1962 vintage).... I know they are not the most up to date performance application on the market.. but I think they are cool and love the old school flanges.Tubes are only 1.75... but they are better than a flat manifold.

Those headers are really cool pieces! Never seen anything like that before. What kind of numbers did you get on the dyno?

Nothing super crazy....365-375 @4000 rpm and Torque was about 525.

I opted for a sensible street engine... Driving is the plan....

Those numbers are more then you will ever need in a street machine  :003: I love the headers, looks like a cast flange and steel tubes, very unique..
Sorry a little off topic but when FE's are the subject I light up :burnout:..
Heres my old one from my Chevy killing sleeper truck when I pulled it out.

Ford Blue blood

Jeff that plate on the rear of the intake is for the PCV.  Ford used a "can" on the sheet metal plate that stuck into the valley.  There was a simple nipple on it that fed a "twisted" pipe that fed a PCV valve that screwed into the rear of the third carb base.  The front left side of the manifold should have a tube for oil fill and a breather.  The correct breather will have a wrap around sheet metal baffle that is designed to "catch" air from the fan.

Awesome Bill.....Yes.....I noticed the block off plate and did not inquire yesterday.(I was just too excited to ask,..I was like a 12 year old kid)..Is this something I can still purchase or is strictly a "Start scrounging" piece?

I am not picking up the engine for a few months,. until the snow is gone....so I can start a list on stuff I need.

Between thee warden and the cost of insurance I'm down to 4 cars now, my 3 and the wardens  :003: I only kept the 428CJ heads, the 427 cam and valve train which are in the 390 now and in the same truck.
That engine I built was for a circle track car and was 12.1 compression so I scrapped the bottom end. Kept all those parts over the years until I built a new 390 for the truck. When I downsized the fleet the truck and a 66 mustang went to my son so they are still in the family and only a few blocks away, I still use the truck at times..
