Title: hood hinge issue
Post by: 1930artdeco on 2026-01-01 13:11
OK, I have had the hood off several times to work on the engine, wire, and sheet metal. Now for some reason when I close the hood the front of it sticks up about 1/2" and I can push straight down on it. I know it is misaligned somewhere, but do I now have broken/loose/worn hinges? Thanks.

Mike

your probly going to get lots of comments on this,  since you have had the hood off many times  an now you have a problem,   you were lucky,        the first time you should have drilled pin locating holes in the hinge an hood brace so you could have gone back to orig position,  now you have to play with adjusting  hole on (tighting  hinge  or hood bracket) what  I have done is, , use a black felt marker an mark top edge of hood bracket an hinge as a adjustment gage,  move it 1/16 at a time till your back to normal,  takes time an patience,   thats they way I did it

You lost me...the "front" of the hood sticks up 1/2", but you can push down on it? You are talking about the front...near the nosepiece? I think it would be very obvious if the hinges were broken. Are both sides up, or only one corner?
Hoods and doors are a major pita getting them aligned, and after you do, as Gerald said, drill some small holes thru the hinge into the framework that supports the hood, so they'll be there next time the hood comes off.
You may want to make note of the new cusswords you're going to come up with over the next few attempts, lol.

And share them with us. Can always use some new ones!  :003:

Awhile back someone else was having trouble getting gaps and so on correct. I forget who but it was suggested to remove the nosepiece which allows access to the four hinge bolts. Do your alignment then re-install the nosepiece. I've never attempted this and even installing the nosepiece is a pain.

I have just removed the hood not the hinges-they are still in their original spots.

Geraldchainsaw-yep now that you have mentioned it I goofed up the alignment.

Rich-yes the whole hood front is up about 1/2" or so, I can push straight down on it. It is weird, it is like the springs went soft and I can stretch them out just by leaning on the hood.

One thing to look at.........the hinge where it bolts on to the hood is a right-angle piece. Naturally, the side of that angle piece that has the bolt holes will be pulled tight against the hood when the bolts are tightened, but it is the OTHER SIDE of the angle piece that CAN BE away from the hood and affect alignment.
ALso, before you try realighning, put some masking tape on the hood at the hinge edges to show where the hinges were before trying to move. If you don't, you may easily lose the reference starting point.

Mike.. when you first got the car.. before any work began,... was the hood on and functioning properly? was is aligned at that point?
If so. the springs should be ok.....

Alignment is tricky,.. and frustrating.
Have you had the entire front sheetmetal off?
The entire front sheet metal is based solely on the front rad support anchor pin.

Just asking to see where the issue may be.

Hi  As you say you can push the hood down. I would look to see what is moving. If front bolt (header panel is front) of hinge is not tight it allows hood pivot on rear bolt.
