Title: Summer 2011- the project between here and there.
Post by: Lono on 2010-09-01 17:50
Now that summer is all but the final squeezin's, I'm getting into the Ranch wagon.
I planned on getting right with the mechanical and not start on the body till later.

I'm still waiting for my neibour to have enough time so taht we can get the truck up here to pull the motor. He works out of town and when he gets home for 2 days, his wife has a honey do list from hell waiting for him. So time to start stripping that blue paint to see whats lurking under it.
I found it sitting on the trailer like this:

It gave me the chance to dig around under it to check the floors and body mounts. All in all, the floors are the work of things, the body looked solid. Shook hands and said, I'll take it. A little digging will prove me right or wrong.

My friend and I got home from looking at it and less than an hour later the owner was pulling in my yard , dropping it off.

Once inside I started pulling out left over aout parts from '70's cougars and LTD's. The original wheels were thrashed but rollers and thats about all that I can say good about them besides they came off real easy.

The blue paint seemed pretty flakey and with a pressure washer in hand I pulled it out of the shop and hosed off what I could off the front end.

Remember the crappy grey primer that wouldnt stick to anything.. well thats whats under the blue paint.

Rather than sand the original paint before coating in gunk primer, they feather edged the chips and scratches and hosed the entire body down in grey before applying the blue. The benifit? Sure makes for easy paint removal and the original pant is gnerally intact.

For the next while I'll leave the tim in place but remove it later on this winter when I get full blown into the bodywork.

So, thats where I'll be spending winter. No complaints, its better than working outside!

Lono,
Looks like a nice platform for building a nice car. The guy that did my bodywork just bought a 56 wagon to redo. I think it's great because he's always had chevy's before he stated working on my 57 and 63. He told me the other day that he remembered what I told him about chevy's, they are like A holes, everybodies got one.
Anyway, you've got a nice ride to work on. The pictures tell what kind of job you want to accomplish. And as far as a winter project, count on it being a never ending project. I'm getting ready to put a 390/406 that should have @ 340 hp in my 57 now. I can't wait till winter. Good luck with your project. Jim

In my quest to clean off all the old blue paint I've yet to discover any horrific rust. The fender wells are like candy.
I'm pushing to get the worst of the old paint off now so that come winter I wont be opening the doors to blow out the dust. Just about froze "one" off last year doing that.

Its been in dry storage for at least 30 years.
The fellow I bought it from got it from his step father and it had been parked when step dad got it so no telling how long its been dry.

the floors will need addressing this winter, both front and rears were water logged at one time.
The vin tag is American so me thinks it spent its like stateside. Come to think of it, I gotta go chec kthe tag to see where it was made.

More sanding and questing for body rot.

I'm pleased to report I've finally found some old body work.
The drivers side of the deck lid has a skim coat about 3 x 2. In digging I found it was a dent, not rust.
Drip rails... mint
Deck lid top and bottom... mint
under deck lid and rear splash apron... all mint.

2 minor dents on the roof, other than that, smooth like butter.
Tomorrow, the final door, quarter and rockers and clean up the shop.

thank you for that generous offer, but I'll struggle through somehow ( placing back of hand to his fevered brow).  :002:

Dont think I'll go for the DelReo look. I kinda like the simple stainless look. I just need to quest for pictures to get inspired for the right colour combo.

Thanks cool 57. that was a great way to burn off an hour.  :003:

Well today ends the exploritory sanding round one.
Where I expected to find rust... there was none.

I am releaved that I did finally find some rot in the tailgate, but not a heart break. Some might call this a minor blemish.

For the life of me I couldnt find the green thats suppose to be the original colour. The tag reads WE1 ( and the car came from San Jose too). I've gone under the doors and chipped away at the blue and i keep coming up with the white  (cream) but no green. Is that where the 1 come in the code?

So with the shop swept out I guess I'll turn to pulling the interior to keep me busy until the motor arrives.

Nice shop Lono...Love that Deuce grille on the wall....I need one of those....well, and the rest of the Deuce that it would fit.  Make mine a roadster, red please.
Coming along nicely on the wagon.  Hopefully, if all works out with the contract at work, I'll be pulling mine out of mothballs again, and getting it soda blasted, replacing the crappy replacement panel (stay away from Schotts panels, bad stuff..) with an EMS quarter, and getting the rest of the body done so I can get some color back on it.  Still going back and forth between white and red/white, not sure yet.  Seems almost all of them are red and white, but it just looks so good...
Anyway, thanks for the inspiration.

Yep, red and whites a good thing.

Still waiting for my motor so I pulled the old girl out. It's going to head up country to Ford_Fellow for one of his projects.

Sure hope to get that truck here soon... getting antsy.

popped the hood off....

Pulled the motor and tranny..

Started scraping and wire wheeling all the mung off..

Sanded and semi glossed the inner fenders and cross member.

tomorrow... a little wet sand and touch up.

With the motor sitting firmly in the well, I'm standing back looking at it.

She aint purdy, but she's sturdy.

I guess I'll drop some t bird valve covers on it, an old oil bath air cleaner and rebuild the stock carb. that should be enough to take away a little of the uglies without killing the budget.

Title: Re: Summer 2011- the project between here and there.
Post by: Lono on 2010-10-10 16:27
started putting the motor back together in the hole.

I have to make some new mounts for the truck rad to get it to fit, but thats small potatos.
Hooked up some hoses, jacked it up and nutted down the motor mounts.

The term "just puttering around" seems to fit.

It's been an easy stitch putting this motor/ tranny in. The only thing I found is I couldn't find a tranny mount that was plug and play. I'm sure they're out there, I just didnt find one..
The tranny mounts to the rubber/steel mount which then mounts into the crossbrace saddle. The old one didnt fit and truck mount didnt fit so it's time to play.

The holes on the tranny are 5.5 inches.

I took the mounting bracket off the 57/ 3 speed overdrive and cut it in half (the hole spacing is 6.5)

After assuring I had good pinion angle my idea was to weld the 74 truck motor mount to the 57 tranny mount.

After tacking them in place, I had another look. All clear and good fitment.
A single hole was drilled in the center of the cross member to accomodate the single bolt of the truck motor mount.

Upon close inspection, I also discovered the drive shaft will not need shortening/ lengthend.. its, just right.

nice way to spend Thanksgiving ( aka Columbus day)

Finally, back in the shop for the best part of the day! This working full time concept really throws a wrench into reality.

I pulled the intake out of the box and dunked it in a very large vat of degreaser and let it sit for a couple hours. Then came out and scrubbed like hell redunked and scrubbed more. It came out nice and clean after about 2 hours of toothbrush, steel wool and other scrubby thing attention.

Out popped the carb from another box. After a lite blast of aluminum paint and a coat of clear, the carb dropped into place for a little look see.

From box number 4, the roof rack came out. 5 roof strips in all. I think I'll shave about 2 inches off its full length before I install it for good. It's fomoco but i dotn know what year. I'm guessing mid 70's.

Was a good day. Wont be back out there for another week... urgh!

Been a while since I posted. Been crazy busy at work and on Friday I retire once and for all with plenty of shop time ahead of me.

I finnished installing the motor and intake and the hood back on. Now I need to find a proper rad to fit.

I found a nifty early 70's roof rack thats a sweet fit too.

The floors were not too bad but required some patching under the drivers, passengers and rear passenger sides.
With that done I can turn to the brakes.

I'm getting a bit ahead of myself but starting to think about colors too. I'm leaning towards a satin finnish something like this...

Hope you all been well. Its been a long winter up here nd still more snow to come!

thanks guys, Rich I shot it in SEM Trim Black - they package it as Hot Rod black. Back in the 80's I worked at a chevrolet dealer body shop and we used it for shooting the hoods of school buses. Its a 2 part top coat and stands up very well and can be blended over or painted over in the future.

I had the steels on the Ranchero for about 2 months an really didnt put a lot of mile on. they're holding up fine. Could be the dry climate we live in.

Turned to working on the interior. There's no room in the budget for repro interiors so made my own panels and installed red interior panels. The front seat is shameful so hidden under the medican blankets until I can have it redone, which will be done before it hits the road.

Is that a Yeoman or Biscayne wagon in the shop? Has to be rarer than the cars we are working on. I think you have to be at least 60 years old to know what it is.

I'm 49 and remember seeing a yeoman in 65.
It's a 2 door 58 Yeoman with a running 235 / 3 speed. I'm doing teh brakes right now and should have it on the road next week.

Lets say I've developed a thing for long roofs.  :burnout:

By the way, what is a Yeoman..is that the Canadian version of the Biscayne?  Rich
Thanks Rich but sorry no naked women or beer fridge in the shop; I promised the wife.

The Yeoman is a one year wonder, produced in the US.
The Yeoman came in a 2 or 4 door model, 6 or 8 cylinder with multiple interior trim options.
58 was the Year chev remixed their product line.

In 55-57 there were 3 series of trim packs on cars and wagons; the 150, 210 and Belair. The 150 series cars included the last of Chevrolets Business Coupes ( I had a 55 BC when I was 18) and sedan deliveries that were bare bones, no stainless vehicles.
The top end of the gleem pile was the Bel air series which included the Nomad in a 2 door only wagon that could be bought in 57 with a corvette FI motor ( I had a 57 Nomad when I was 19-20, but here's when it turns to an ex wife story, we wont go there except to say I never got over my passion for long roofs).

In 58 The Yeoman would have been a dolled up 150; Basic, limited and spartan but a bit more stainless than the 150 series.
There was also the Delray ( When I was 18-20 I played guitar and sang in a rockabilly band called the Delrays which also turns back into the ex wife story but I degress). It offered more options including a radio and more interior packages plus an automatic.
This was now the 1100/ 1200 series ( 1100 was the 6, 1200 the V8)

If you wanted more polish and shine, you bought a Brookwood; a dolled up Delray similar to the 210 series of the past. And if you missed placing your 57 Nomad order, you got the 58 nomad in a 4 door family friendly ride as the 2 door version was obsolete. The Brookwood/ Biscayne was the 1500 and 1600 series based again on engine. The Nomad/impala and Belair fell into the 1700/ 1800 series.

In not sure how the production numbers compare between the Ranchwagon and the Yeoman but side by side, they seem to be equally equipted.  In 58 Chevrolet produced 16,590 2 door wagons.

Thank you for the complements on the shop; It's really a time machine. When I get in there and turn on the 200 disk CD player filled with early rockabilly, Mississippi and Atlanta Blues with splashes of surf music, there's not a care in the world and I'm in the moment.  :001:

slogging along with the trim panels.
I admit it, there are 2 things in rodding that bring me to tears.. electrical and interiors. Headliners, just throw me off a cliff.
It's not perfect but a whole lot nicer.

The interior is cool, love the Mexican blankets. I have a well stocked beer fridge, old school sansui stereo, some attractive women (posters,no naked ones) Is this so wrong?  Mark

Lono:

Very nice combination of colors on your interior mods.  The panels look kind of a reddish/orange, or is the color kind of like the torquoise I used to have on my 57.  The torquoise on my 57 in photos could look like anything from a mint green to almost a sky blue.  It all seemed to depend on the lighting, the clouds in the sky, to the camera lens and/or speed the picture was taken at.  I looked back on some of the previous pictures you've sent and the color seems to look more red.  Either way, your interior is sure looking great as it comes out on my computer screen.

No, its red for sure; I should have set the white ballance on my camera because inside it makes it look Harley Orange.  :burnout:

New Master and wheel cylinders installed. The pads and drums have been done not many miles ago so now she can stop. It canst start yet, but stopping isnt a problem.  :burnout:

I've also been at the Chev ( I promise not to post any more about it). The brakes are done, wiring all working now and runs and drives. I need to do the carb yet, but thats a later project.. maybe replace it with a dual rochester set up. :002:

The Reapers Car Club is holding our second meet here on August 6/7. My goal is to have both of them running and moving on their own, even if they're not on the road quite yet.

I guess I'll attack the tranny lines and rad hoses today.

A special call out and thank you to a mystery "Larry" who got in in touch with a fellow with a bumper.

Tomorrow I'll load it up and send it off to a friend to wire it up... then home to do the brakes .

Lono, I'm on vacation in Door County (north of Greenbay), what do I see sitting by the side of the road for sale, a 58 Chev 2-door wagon. What are the odds.  Mark

Just got back in from 3 days of putting in 2 inch lowering blocks and 2 inch lowering coils. Grabbed the camera and the batteries were dead.
Had to sit and drink a beer and oogle it for a while.  :003:

The electrical is done and without the mufflers it sounds like its ready for the drag strip.

Just love the new ride height... low, prowler like.. yup yup!

Picks tomorrow... happy camper here!

Carpet and front and she's a real car.
