Title: Steering Column / Horn Wire
Post by: alstoy on 2011-09-27 23:51
I have a John Starks R&P steering kit on its way to me down here in New Zealand and will be installing it before Christmas for Americarna (see link below). I had not considered the issue of the horn wire down the steering column becoming redundant.

I have searched the site and seen the various 'fix's' but was wondering if there are any updated idea's. It is quite difficult for me to get hold of a 58 column down here in NZ so that option is probably not viable.

Any further thoughts on the matter ?

I have a 63 Galaxie column in mine, it comes with a rag joint which can connect to many different steering boxes/racks.  Galaxie parts should be easier to find.

I couldn't find all my 58 horn parts, so I put a push button on the lower lip of the dash ,down by the knees.  Mark

I am using a 75 f100 steering column in my ranchero so I used a push button like frankenstien57 on the bottom lip of the dash to the right of the steering column, you cant see it but its easy to use works great.

Al...greeting from up over...check out www.wurthitdesigns.com...at one time he had some photos on reworking the stock steering column to fit with the rack kit.
I think you'll be pleased with John's Rack kit. I haven't installed mine yet..a this winter project..but it sure looks good.
What I'm doing for a steering column (97 Mustang) wouldn't help you a bit.

Thanks guys, I am sure we can come up with a solution. Was talking to one of my mates over a beer last night and he seems pretty sure he can make up something that will work via an external wire, using a 'collar' to create the earth. We will see.

Car is going the New Zealand Hot Rod Nationals in a couple of weeks. So some polishing coming up. Link below

You can use a 59 turn signal/horn brush in the 57 column, you'll have to drill the turn signal arm out hole a couple sizes and re drill one mounting hole, then drill a hole in the 57 steering wheel for the horn contact.

I just finished doing it to cool57's fairlane.

redrill this mounting hole,,,

drill the turn signal arm hole out so the shaft will clear,,,

drill the wheel for the brush/contact,,,

and you'll need the plastic horn retainer that screws to the horn ring.

Tinman, I like your horn wire method. Can you provide a little more info, maybe a step by step thing?

Hopefully someone can help. I want the Diameter of the steering column shaft, mine is still in the car so I was hoping someone had one 'on the bench' and can give me the measurement.

Thanks in anticipation

Alan
