Title: Fuel tank capacity
Post by: Ecode70D on 2014-06-12 18:33
I just installed a new stock fuel tank in my custom today and would like to how much gas a stock 57 tank holds.
Ford Blue blood mentioned in a previous thread putting one gallon at a time and monitor the fuel gauge.  This is a good time for me to find out how accurate my sending unit is.  I've already put in 6 gallons.  So I would like to know the total amount it takes to fill it up.
Thanks for any and all answers.

Our 57 Ford owners manual back in 1957 stated 19 gallons.

Thanks Clusterbuster..   Since you got it from the owner's manual, I'll go with that.  What I'm trying to figure out is  how many more trips I have to make to the gas station filling up containers so I can fill the tank one gallon at a time.

I put 19 gallons in the tank one gallon at a time and recorded the graduations on my chart.  It looks like the sending is working as it should.  It's at the full mark now.  On Monday I'll get the car on the ground and see what happens, then I'll drive it to the filling station and top it off.
This will be a good time for me to take it on a nice long drive to see how well the mileage is. I don't expect it to be very good.

Ecode, I guess I will have to take that one back. I would have sworn the manual back then stated 19 gallons, but I got hold of an old manual and it states 20 gallons. Changed it ??? You wouldn't think so!!

Jim...There are some people that say "Those manuals speak with a forked tongue".

Clusterbuster ... Actually the reason I asked the question in the first place was so I could figure out how many gas cans I had to scrounge up to take to the filling station in one trip.  So 19 was good enough .    Jay

mine says the same thing with an ''asterick''    * Mounted in Vehicle   makes me think it may hold more sitting perfectly flat on a bench but in a car may trap air and limits itself.

I took the  car to the filling station today to top off the 19 gallons and it only took about 1/2 gallon to fill it up.  So my new tank takes about 19-20 gallons.
