Title: Question for those using a Mustang Hydro-Boost & Master Cylinder set up
Post by: KYBlueOval on 2017-01-07 14:59
I acquired a Hydro-Boost & Master Cylinder from a '03 Mustang GT and have a couple of questions.
I've read a lot here on the forum about using this set up and understand that the M.C. can be unbolted from the Hydro-Boost and the Hydro-Boost rotated 180 degrees, putting the Hydro-Boost cylinder on the right side of the M.C. ( looking at it from the front of the car ), and the hose connections are then on the bottom...........correct?
The Hydro-Boost/M.C.  attaches to the firewall with a "mounting plate", for lack of a better word,  that is not a flat piece, but rather a stamped piece that has a pitch to it making the Hydro-Boost /M.C.unit, mount pointing up or down , depending on whether or not the Hydro-Boost has been rotated 180 degrees.........is that correct? And is that what you are doing, or are you making a new flat mounting plate to attach the unit to the firewall?
I understand I'll need some special fittings etc..  Am I "seeing" this correctly?  What am I missing.........especially regarding the pitched mounting plate?
As always ,thanks in advance for your replies and guidance.
John

I never looked into rotating mine, but the unit will need to be pointing upwards because that's the way the master is made, so I would think it's a matter of separating the hydroboost from the mounting plate, and rotating the booster 180, leaving the plate in it's original position.
Gasman is the only one I'm aware of that rotated his booster, but he modified his firewall to suit.
Take a close look, though, it will put the lines on the bottom, but also rotate them to the engine side. I wouldn't do it unless your engine and steering is installed and you can verify interference problems.
I'm assuming your '03 is the same as my 02 (01?).

A 460 takes up all the real estate.  If not for the 460, there would be no need to rotate the booster unless for style/appearance.  I may not have needed the space but I liked the appearance of the plumbing on the bottom.  The angle of the booster is important for under hood clearance but more so for the angle/alignment with the brake pedal.  I did not try to mount the booster to the OEM firewall.  I had a donor car so I used the steering column, part of the pedal/booster support, and part of the firewall.  My pedal support is very custom with the firewall end being from the donor (and compatible with the booster), the middle pedals being '57, and the dash attach end being compatible to the Lincoln steering column and '65 Thunderbird dash.  Since this is a clear as mud for what you need to do, this upgrade is worth the effort.  This upgrade will give you outstanding power brake assistance...very little pedal effort for maximum braking.

I was hoping you would weight in on this..........thanks.
I like the hoses on the bottom as well, but could live with them on top if that is what works best. I understand what you did with the firewall........I think.
I'm not ready to install this at this moment in time, but I wanted to get a clear picture of what I should be doing  when I get to that point and why.
I'll revisit the "mounted angle" of the Hydro-Boost/M.C. when I get to that point. In the mean time I keep thinking about remaking the mounting plate so the unit mounts level or close to level. What I'm hearing is that the angle is required to make the pedal connection and have it function correctly, so making it more level may not work. Time will tell.
Thanks
John

I'll try and post some pics that show what I'm talking about. The hydroboost as mounted to the '57 firewall isn't at as much upward angle as I believe it would be mounted on the Mustang's firewall.  note the Booster is pointed upwards, but the master is not totally level. (It is more level than appears in this pic) also the pic I'm posting from the front view....imagine that booster rotated 180*. I don't think it would even work with my 4.6 as the supply/return lines would be on top of the valve cover.

Thanks Rich. I'm not at the point of actually installing it.........just trying to get my head around what I'll be facing when I get to that point.

My booster is located lower than Rich's and therefore nearer to level.  It is parallel with the engine and the engine was set to 4 degrees.

Good point with the engine angle reference. Mine is pretty close to Zero. Love it when a plan actually works out.
correction...mine is at 2 degrees

Thanks. All good information. The Wilwood Reservoir ? Is it just the reservoir or an entire M.C. from Wilwood ?

I'm starting to gather the parts for this swap as well. I read up quite a bit and found this to be a popular swap for just about all makes/models. There is a pretty informative thread for ford trucks on this topic as well. I'll find the link and add it here...

Also, it  happens I have an extra  brand new Wiwood 1.16 inch bore aluminum reservoir if you are interested. Send me a private message, I think it is polished aluminum.

It's a one piece Wilwood MC in 1-1/8" bore.  The OEM '76 Lincoln worked great but I got tired of trying to make in look presentable.

Thanks for the reply and offer on the Wilwood M.C.. I'm trying my best to stay away from "Bling" under the hood on this car. I'll pass at this point in time
Thanks
