Title: How to change out '57 equipped with Fordomatic steering box
Post by: dave362 on 2008-05-20 06:01
Folks please let me know if the '57 Ford shop manual is
correct in that the steering box on my '57 Fairlane 500 with Fordomatic
has to be removed out through the passenger compartment? Is the
steering column part of the box or can it be detached at the steering box?
Just ordered a rebuilt from Concours parts as mine keeps locking up.

thanks,
Dave

well the answer i guess would be yes and no. no ya don't have to remove it out through the drivers side compartment , but ya have to remove and pull back the steering colum anyway so it's just simpler and easier to work with and work on when it all comes out and back in as a unit.

I think the big question is can you get the car high enough to take it out the bottom.

Believe it or not my friend Jerry (aka McGyver) has a lift that got
the car up high enough to get the steering box out of the bottom of the car, the
new steering box is in and she drives like brand new plus by luck the turn signal
cancelling cam starting working again for left turns!

Dave,
When you see this please advise where you got a new box, or was it a new ued box. I'd like to replace or rebuild mine.

Haven't tried then, I had never head of being able to get a fully rebuilt original steering box, but I'll definately look into it. I'm going to fix the power steering valve first.

Sorry just saw this now, mine was a rebuilt unit with exchange from Concours
www.concoursparts.com in Nevada. It was about $600 I think as my 2008 stimulus check
paid for it.  ;-)
