Title: Gas pedal and linkage
Post by: 59meteor on 2017-07-16 21:10
Just wondering what you guys with FE swaps are using for throttle linkage. My 59 2 door sedan is a FACTORY 332 automatic car, just about ready to install the fresh 428 CJ and 4 speed Toploader. However, since my 59 had an automatic transmission, the throttle linkage on the firewall side, is really short, and points straight ahead, and used a goofy looking bellcrank setup that combines the throttle linkage to the carb, as well as the transmission kickdown linkage. Years ago, when I swapped a FE into my 57 Ford Sedan Delivery, replacing the original 272 Y Block and 3 speed manual, I retained the stock throttle linkage , which was longer and pointed up & forward than my 59 linkage.
I have also considered switching to a hanging gas pedal and cable setup, from a later Ford car. Anybody else made the switch, and if so, what donor car did get the pedal and cable from? I really have no interest in buying a new billet aftermarket pedal setup, would prefer to use OE Ford stuff if I go that route.

I have always scraped the OEM linkage for OEM supended pedal with cable.  Getting rid of the CruiseOMatic passing gear linkage would be necessary for 4spd swap.  I see little difference between donor vehicles.  I've used '65 Galaxie, '76 Lincoln, '97 Mustang.  Whichever pedal style you prefer and cable length needed.  OEM cables work but if not the right length are a not readily modified.  I have used aftermarket cable kits.  These kits are easy to cut to length and have several popular accessory pieces.

Look at the mid 70s Mustang and Granada cables.  The best part of these is the built in spring.  It surrounds the end of the cable at the carburetor and eliminates the need for dual springs.  Been too many years since I built a car with one of these so I can't help with a part number but the "book" at my NAPA (yes they still have books) store has the length of the cable as part of the specifications.

Lynn, your firewall mounted lever looks exactly like what my 57 Sedan Delivery had. (272 V8, 3 speed standard originally). I wish I could find a lever like that from a 59. A buddy gave me a similar lever assembly from a 57, but it attatchs to the firewall differently than my 59, but since my firewall is already painted, I really would like to avoid any major modifying of that area.
