Post by: racton on 2018-01-24 08:38
:unitedstates:Hello folks,I picked -up a nice set of cragar wheels for small$$$$ yesterday. The rears are 8inches wide.I was going to mount a 245x60x14 on that wheel. Will it fit my stock custom 300?

I think there's a good chance the 8" width is going to be a problem. It all depends on the backspacing. I'd check the wheel itself on the car before you have a tire mounted and give it a visual, keeping in mind the tire width at the sidewalls will be wider. If you can measure the backspace and post that here I'm sure some of the guys can give you a definite yay or nay. Lots of excelent recent wheel discussions in the tire and wheel section.

I have an old set of Centerline auto drags 8.5 width with 4.875 B/S mounted on 255/60/15 M/T street radials and they fit. Not much room though, 1/2" to wheel lip and slightly more to the leaf spring. The section width is 10.25. Your B/S is the biggest factor whether it's going to rub or not.

:unitedstates:  Thanks to all that responded. With the wheel mounted(no tire) there is 2 1/2 inches to the edge of the spring. If i am measuring correctly 4 inches b/s.From rear face of wheel to outside of wheel. The wheel is 7 inches not 8 .Thanks for the help.  racton.ohio

Back spacing is the distance between the inner edge of the wheel (not the tire mounting surface) and the mounting flange face. A 7" wheel is 8" wide. 4" B.S. puts the flange face dead center of the wheel (zero offset). Your wheel will fit with at least 235 wide ties though fender edge clearance will be minimal. More backspacing would be desirable.

Yep, most wheel manufacturers go the wrong way (for us) when it comes to the difference in backspace from a 7" wheel to an 8", which is why I originally stated you might have a problem with an 8" wheel. Glad it looks like you'll have something usable. Cragers are a good looking wheel.

FWIW  I had a 15x7 4BS Cragars on my Country Sedan. 235/75-15. shouldn't be much difference in width even 15/14".
very tight to get in, deflated, axle wedged down. tires clearing fine on straight but in cornering there was slight squealing. lower front fender lip. I just used them for a short period when I was welding floors to prevent my whitewalls getting dirty. my fender lips are still oem. possibly with a bit of work to the wheel well lips 235s could clear.Like Lynn already stated. 245/60/14 are a lot smaller than 235/75/15. IMHO the 245 will not look good an a 57. they need big rear tires.

When I bought slicks and put 8 inch wide wheels on it I used a 10.2" wide slick. But, I had to special order the wheels to have a 5 1/8" BS. A 245 X 60 - 14 tire is about 9.65" wide. A 7.50 X 14 tire won't fit it if the backspace on the wheel is wrong. I've got a set of mags that have 4.75" backspace and it's all you can do to not have them scrape the fenders with 9.75" wide tires.

A little more info on tires, bear with me... the standard tires on our car were 7.50 or 8.00 x 14. These tires have an aspect ratio of .88. That means that the tire sidewall height is .88 x the section width. The overall diameter of these tires would be .88 x 7.50 x 2 + 14 = 27.2" for the 7.50 tire or .88 x 8.00 x 2 + 14 = 28.08" for the 8.00 tire.
I shot for that diameter with the widest tire that would be the same diameter on a 15" wheel.... 235 divided by 25.4 mm/in gives a section width of 9.25" if I use a 235 tire with a .70 aspect ratio this tire diameter is 9.25 x .70 x 2 + 15 = 27.95"        ( 235/70 x 15 )

A 235/75 x 15 tire is 235/25.4 x .75 x 2 + 15 = 28.87" inches in diameter.

You can do these calcs on a phone in a minute.

IMO, a 225 or 235/75 15 looks just right in the rear wheelwell. that's a 225/75-15 here

Looks SO SWEEEET!!!. I went on a mission a while back to get my speedometer accurate, hence my obsession with tire diameters. I was crazy enough to ditch almost new 225/60 tires (at 25.63" they were too small in diameter) to get the speedo almost dead on. Now I am looking at going to 275/60's on 8" rims with 5.25 B.S. (on the back). By my calcs the 275's would be 28" diameter too.  :003:
