Title: Ford shop manual discrepancy!
Post by: Fabulous50s on 2020-08-29 10:01
Had what I thought would be a nice easy job of adjusting steering box preload.

Followed simple procedure of disconnecting drag link from pitman arm and used a digital fishing scale to measure preload. The manual says to "back off" sector shaft adjustment prior to measuring the steering effort. I assume "back off" means counter clockwise.

After determining steering shaft bearing preload is within spec, I moved on to sector shaft adjustment. Manual says "turn sector shaft adjustment screw counterclockwise until a steering effort of 1/2- 1 1/2 pounds is necessary".

Um...... doesn't clockwise (assuming the adjustment screw is right hand thread) add preload?
