Title: incredible low milage original tan/white 4dr Country sedan wagon on ebay
Post by: djfordmanjack on 2021-01-12 15:45
This is not mine.
If anybody is in the market, THIS is the wagon to buy. it is just unbelievable and it knocks me out. Can you believe it ! 27k miles survivor.
considering how many hours and how much money goes into restoration of a project car, this survivor seems quite reasonable.

just look at that spectacular factory original linoleum flooring and headliner.....everybody knows how both usually get stained, worn and ripped. not this one. They must have pampered that ole Lady. wow.....!

and that dash, inserts, wheel and button..... Nobody can possibly ever restore it like that. it is virtually factory fresh.

And that factory rubber floor mat !!!!! OMG, can you believe this.

Ole ladys usually didn't put headers on 27,000 mile station wagons  :003:

you are correct Jim ! but judging from the VIN tag and other things the milage appears to be real. imho. he also writes something about the power steering not installed, so maybe they were messing around with that? I have never seen a cracked Y block manifold before, that needed replacing. and 57s didn't have the crossover pipe anymore, they were always dual manifolds and joined under the bellhousing for a single muffler/tailpipe?!

Are you seeing more things indicative of not being what seller states ? just asking out of personal interest. not to pick on a seller.

The valve cover decal seems to be a replacement and thats an awful lot of camber caster shims ?!? but it even has the spark plug wire shieldings in place. m/c and brake light switch/wire loom all seem og. can you see the og vaccuum line clip in place ?
64 years is a loooooong time. :002:

There is something about survivor cars that makes me flip out.

From the dirt on the steering gear box, the column rust, paint on the timing chain cover, valley cover it doesn't jive with the rest of the condition, It looks like a nice restoration but I have my doubts about being original. You really can tell unless you see it in person and crawl all over it.

Post by: djfordmanjack on 2021-01-12 16:49
I hear you Jim, slight overspray found on the frame or elsewhere would tell us a lot. But from my own experience with those cars, it could be a true survivor. look at those dimples in the white vinyl on the seats. that's just the way they were padded with cotton backing from the factory. I doubt that anybody would go to the length recreating these details. look at those stunning door panels. check out the switch panels chrome and paint detailing. Usually a huge sign for turned over oddometers or restored cars is the gauge cluster. on High milage cars usually the plastichrome flakes off heavily and repainted panels never look that crisp around the idiot lights. this speedo bezel has just minor wear and check the Philips head screws and rubber seal around that mint looking gear selector. I have yet to see a cargo area linoleum flooring that looks so close to (or hopefully is) original. no scratches or misalignment on the bench chrome parts. A dead giveaway would be cracked or recovered wheel well covers. but look at those things, they appear to be the original grained brown vinyl in great condition. I have probably seen pics of dozens if not hundreds of 57 wagons and none had such pretty cargo flooring and a not rust stained (from roof bows) fabric headliner, which seems to be totally original ( ok SMS makes a proper reproduction, so we don't know).

I believe that surface rust and dust in the engine compartment would occur after 64 years. But as you pointed out, that modern header makes you start to wonder.

I still want to believe that this is an always garaged survivor car.

Jim, look at the cad plated body mount bolts, the Philips head screws everywhere, the taillight crosswire loom hanging from the panel (again no overspray), the hinges, those said wheel well covers, the stainless tailgate strips and all. How was anybody going to restore these minute details without asking 100k for the car ?

I studied the hardware section of the body book may times. even the large flat headed metalscrews that hold the linoleum corners to the panels, they appear totally factory correct. Now I have owned 3 57 wagons so far and it was always a mix of this and that, while my 4dr is also a survivor and had mostly correct hardware, but the flooring was pretty much shot and chipping off.

You might be right G, but I still have my doubts  :002:. Look at the adjusting screw on the steering box, it appears to be screwed all the way in, that wouldn't be necessary on a 27000 mile car. A car that old and in that condition would have spent 95% of it's life in a garage and the engine should be in equivalent condition. The steering column is painted, how did it end up so rusty?

you definitely have a point there ! I really don't understand those neglected mechanical parts as well. maybe the car has 127k and was freshened up/cleaned inside.

You know what, Jim, my sleep is already ruined tonight. and a little phoney, when somebody advertising such a car and he is not even using the correct model designation (station wagon , instead of Country Sedan), doesn't know the correct color name ( just 'tan' for Doeskin Tan and Colonial White) and he doesn't even read the VIN tag and laying out the codes. He might not be a 57 enthusiast at all and how would he be able to verify original paint, those factory overspray patterns and primer colors under the floorboards, that we have all studied so well here. I have to admit that your concerns are growing on me....

Nonetheless, this appears to be a super nice, clean dry and very original 57, whether cosmetically restored or survivor, and anybody interested in it would be highly encouraged to check it out in person!

It's a beautiful car for sure. Problem with most cars like that......what would you do with it? You sure wouldn't want to drive it. When I first looked at it, it reminded me of a doeskin/c. white '56 Parklane that the late Larry Grillet from Childress Texas had. It was a concourse 98 point car. Larry spent a long time looking at my car the day I saw it, I almost asked if he'd be interested in a trade.

Looks to be an original car to me.    The original engine blocks were not prepped well for paint originally and a pressure washing sometime in its life could have blown the paint off.  A car of this age has had to had a few mechanical items such as the master cylinder, wheel cylinders, carb kit, heater and rad hoses, etc have been gone over to make it driveable after sitting. The headers seem to be a poor choise, but easily corrected.  The cracks on the firewall paint are from the tar based seam sealer cracking from age.   All the cad plating on the car is still decent which is a sign it wasn't in the weather.   The wheel house covers, floor mat, seat covers, headliner, dash, original battery cables, etc is amazingly nice and preserved. No one could restore to this level of detail and leave so much originality. A small amount of detailing would make this an amazing car. A car lik ethis could still be driven occasionally in good weather with out hurting anything.  Hopefully the right person ends up with this car and shares all the detail with us.

dunno. well possible. He has some other neat vintage stuff advertised, so most probably an enthusiast, but maybe just not enough into 57 Fords. If that car was mine it would never leave my driveway without ME behind the wheel. :003:
I would also drive it.
But, people are right when they are concerned about owning or driving og paint matching# one owner survivor cars. I do know that firsthand. I own a 1956 VW beetle ( yeah some of you might say, ok... I'm out...which is ok). it is exactly that. a one owner, og paint, og engine, og interior, rustfree, even the wheels and hubcaps are still og and date matching to the car. I even still have the first ever factory delivered set of tires along with the newly purchased whitewalls. local car, always been in a 5 mile radius of where sold new. it is a solid driver and would start up and go for hundreds of miles anywhere, anytime. This Christmas I inspected the (expensive) 6V battery ( always stored out of car), only to find it cracked and blown up after 2.5 years since purchased new. because I haven't driven that baby in 1-1/2 years....so I am at lack of words for my own stupidity of owning cherry cars, that I don't even drive. what do you guys think ?

That is one mint bug, I understand not wanting to drive it. I've only owned one, a 65 still 6V. I was passed down from my Dad when he bought a VW camper. 40,000 mile Calif car all original. I gave it to the wife to drive but she never liked it because it reminded her of her first car that was a Karmann Gia. I sold it like a dumb ass, another car I should have kept  :005:

That's a beautiful bug! If it were mine I'd probably be making up excuses to drive it everyday. My concern these days though is not so much racking up the mileage, but rather the hordes of inattentive 20-somethings trying to text, take selfies, check their facebook, and do their makeup while driving.

The only VW I ever owned was a 1966 1300 Beetle back in the early 70s, didn`t take long to decide I NEVER wanted to drive another VW again! O0. As for the wagon, certainly appears to be a beauty, but I see no harm in driving it on nice days, but as a daily driver, racking up the miles , and addressing the mechanical issues sure to arise with a almost 65 year old original car, would soon affect it`s "survivor" status, I am afraid.

They were made to drive and we are only here on the God forsaken marble for only so long. It's our hobby and passion so why not enjoy it. IDK about you guys, but looking at them sitting in a garage does me absolutely no good.
It's like the guys who race vintage race cars like Ferraris and Cobras, I used to think they were nuts, but as i got older, I realized you don't keep a race horse locked up in a stable; they were made to run.
Title: Re: incredible low milage original tan/white 4dr Country sedan wagon on ebay
Post by: djfordmanjack on 2021-01-14 06:51
Definitely second your opinion, Joe. BUT....

the saying is correct. they are only original once.
And once they are worn, we all know how much money and efforts it costs to restore back to presentable condition.

Those guys in the vintage race cars are big money boys. Which is ok. for them. if they crash they have it restored. Again, that is ok, because other guys can make their living from that.
But for the average collector, like probably most of us on here, its hard work and even finding the time to properly clean a survivor car is becoming a menace to me personally. you can't take it to the car wash, you don't want to simply wipe it down with modern solvents or a Duster. you can't really just sit on the original upholstery (if cloth). You may not want to take it out for a longer summer drive, in case you got in a shower, the sun came back out and the water drops would leave burn stains on that enamel or laquer paint.....so, imho, even if we want to drive and use such cars. they come with a huge burdon as well. This is just my personal observation. To me og paint survivors are the most desirable, but least fun cars. This is crazy I know.
Probably, if money and space would not be an issue, I would want some of my favorite cars (34/57 Fords,an early 1950s bug. one each) in said mint survivor condition in a big hallway next to my living room, so I could look at them and enjoy them all the time. then I would want EXACTLY the same cars in restored or driver condition over in the garage. I dont know.... :003:

I agree G, it is crazy. Every time I hit the road it's a roll of the dice. If it gets wrecked I can't afford to have some one else fix it and I'm getting to old to do it myself. I just can't own a 57 and not drive it. I don't know what I would do if I owned an all original car, but that will never happen so I don't have to worry about it  :003:

This is insane. Just when we thought it was too good to be true, another one comes up. this time even a Del Rio ! There hasnt been a Del Rio advertised in a year or so !!!
This one is more like driver quality car that I wouldn't hesitate taking out. It also has all the factory delivered cargo flooring, albeit in a slightly more used condition. but it's still all there. Red is not my personal favorite, but this is a great og paint survivor car. solid color DelRio and flame red interior....stunning !

     X2 what Jim said.

Now you found the one that I really like because it is a 2dr.   For now, the automatic wouldn't bother me.  I have everything needed to make it standard shift with the shifter on  the column.  I would leave the automatic rear gears in it though. ,
I would also have to be about 5 or 10 years younger with less obligations.

Nice clean, original paint Del Rio like this should be able to fetch 35k. If it were mine I wouldn't take any less for it, but if it were mine I wouldn't be selling it either. Great vehicle to travel and see the country in. You could even look into towing a vintage trailer, something an Airstream, Bambi would be perfect.

How did the factory paint stamp get over top of the dealer sticker?

I'm not a wgn owner but, was the white band across the dash not on wgns?

A lot of fastners are wrong also.

I heard D.Carpenter is repopping the brown cargo area covering.

Ron, as you know, the check stamps were actually that, paint stamped on the factory paint. not like the available repro stickers.
so the og check stamps you can actually literally feel with your finger. I can imagine that decades have made the stamp showing in the overlaying dealer decal. that detail looked so convincing on the tan one. None of my wagons had a two tone dash ( white panel insert). they were solid colored and the wagon above looks oem correct. What hardware are you referring to ?

I was looking at all the miscellaneous Philips slot screws in the cargo area and had the impression it all looked very original. those are the 'panhead'(?) Philips slot screws holding the corners of the Linoleum flooring.
I don't know about the availability of the lining material though.
Again, we cannot speak for the car or seller, unless anybody has seen it in person in the meantime. Listing has ended, so we don't know if it sold online or not. also the red Del Rio was also ended early and probably sold in person. Both wagons were impressive looking in the ads !

Regarding the two tone dash... My Fairline 500 had a two tone dash, the same colors as the two toned exteriors (as I remember?). Since the wagon is a single color....

Concerning the dashboard color, I have not seen any 57 wagon, Sedan Delivery, or Custom model with a 2 tone dash. I always thought that was only done on the Fairline series models. Furthermore, the 116" wheelbase cars came with a limited number of dash colors, both my 57 Sedan Deliveries and my 57 Custom, all had gray dashboards, as does my 59 Tudor. The Fairlane models had more color choices it seems.

I had the same impression of the two tone dash being limited to the Fairlane models. I find it interesting though, that in the (painted) 57 wagon only brochure there are several illustrations showing a two tone dash. It's interesting that they introduced that in the bruchure, but maybe never offered to the public or hardly any ordered that way. Very interesting detail !

A good pro detail guy can clean a car this well (or better under the hood). I had the guy at the dealer I worked at do my girlfriends car every spring and it always looked brand new.
