Is there a "special tool" needed to remove interior door and window handles or a any "tricks" so I do not damage the interior door panel? I am having trouble getting them off in order to remove/replace the exterior door handle. Any input/help would be greatly appreciated! H. Otto, Midland, MI

I always used a flat blade screw driver and a lot of patience. No problem.
But having said that, Harbor Freight makes a selection of tools for that purpose that come in one package.
Pretty much any auto parts store should have the door handle clip removal tool in stock. It is a flat piece of thin steel with a notch to slip the clips from the handles, that you slip between the handle and door panel, and push/twist a bit to dislodge the clip without any damage. Or, sometimes you can sneak a rag or piece of cloth between the handle and door panel, and with a back and forth motion, snag the ends of the U shaped clip to dislodge the clip. The handles slip over splined shafts, and the shaft has a groove that the spring clip snaps into, to hold the handle in place. The basic design and clips are used by many auto manufacturers, and remained unchanged for decades. I was a Toyota dealership mechanic for many years, a 2016 Corolla has the same clips holding the handles on , as a 57 Ford does.
Align the tool handle with the door handle. Insert the tool between the handle and the plastic washer. Clear as mud! I'll look for a picture.
Thanks for the info; I'll get the "tool" @ local auto parts store and follow all your instructions!
I got the "tool" and was able to remove interior door and window handles and then remove the interior panel. Had to remove/adjust the exterior door handle. Again, THANKS for all your help!!!
Congrats! Glad we could all be of some help...only thing that would have been better is for one (or more) of us to pop on over and give ya' hand! LOL!!! (and drink your adult beverages! :occasion14: )
