Title: Inline Heater Control Valve
Post by: slopokpete on 2022-04-27 14:00
I'm at the point in my '57 Ranchero project where I need to plumb for the heater. The heater core had been previously modified to eliminate the factory style heater valve.  I know there is an inline valve that was used on the 70's Ford pickups but it's indexing is backwards from the way the temperature cable works on the '57.  In other words the pick up cable pulls the valve to open and the '57 is pushing the cable to open the valve. Is there a valve that will work correctly in this application? I was trying to avoid a big loop of cable under the hood.
Hopefully my predicament makes sense!

Thanks
Jeff

I'm not certain what happened but somebody was kind enough to reply with a picture of their valve installation in a T-Bird and now it is gone?

Anyway the valve that I have has an arrow one the underside, that I am assuming indicates flow direction, and if it is installed so that cable geometry works the flow arrow is pointing towards the engine not the heater core.  In testing the valve when shut in the correct flow direction there is no flow.  Testing in the other flow direction and the valve being shut there is small amount of flow.  Maybe this is a quirk of the particular valve that I purchased?

Any thoughts or suggestions?

I used a valve like this.

I was able to take the operating handle off and then took the two screws out of the mounting plate on the side and swapped it to the other side. This reversed the mount for the cable so it would work correctly. I mounted the valve on the inner fender and it looks good but I mounted the valve a little to far back on the fender. This caused a sharp bend in the cable causing it to work hard in the wide open position. If it was moved forward a little bit there would not be a problem.
