Title: axles in 57 RW
Post by: bagboy on 2008-12-31 13:11
Are the axles on 57RW [28spline] stronger than a pass. axles .This is on a big bearing rear end. I have put a rebuilt   "equel lock"  "sic" with 4;11 gears in my wagon AOD and 351w complete the mix.

i don't believe the axels are any bigger/stronger then any other 28 spline, but they do carry a larger/bigger bearing.

I ran 28 spline in my Ranchero back in the 70's. Ran 12-s with 390 @ 4000 lbs.
Wasn't a problem. I bought aftermarket 28's and then went to 31 spline spool with a bigger motor.

in MHO for what it worth, the big advantage that the 31spline ael has is it is easily cut and shorten when need. i've ran 28 spline axels in everything from stock fords to 56 studebaker with a 500 inch caddy w/a turbo400 and a 355 posi with no problems.

edited: sorry for the use of them GM words memtioned.  i'll go wash my mouth out with soap later, lol.

I'm wondering why you are worried about breaking 28 spline axles, I've seen them abused on dirt and asphalt tracks for years without fail. You must have some wicked windsor going in there, Mark

When I get my hi rpm cleveland and toploader in, I want 31 splines.  For now, I dont see any problem with 28 splines.  It really is all in how you drive it.   I tend to abuse my stuff on a regular basis, 5500 rpm launces on slicks are cool.. :003:.. Better safe than sorry, you know?

well jay, run it like you stoleit and start lookin for a 31 spline rear end, when ya break it , then ya fix it,lol. thats wahat i do. but the only car i've ever owned with 31 splined axles was my 72  grand sport 351 cleveland 4 barrel. but then i had 3:55's andwith wife like to launch it like she was at the finals of the summer nationals, lmao :005:
