OK, I have rt front fender off to do some metal repairs. However, the top bolt (the one that you can reach through the fresh air screen/wiper area) hole has been cut up and is really large now. Does anyone have a picture of what the hole should look like and the nut that goes there? I know it is a square nut that should be caged I assume. but how does it fit there and then how do I weld it in?
thanks,
Mike
I've thought about this since first reading this question on Facebook. I couple of knowledgeable people mentioned caged nut. I have seen several broken ones and had to repair one of mine. I just don't remember that fastener being a caged nut. I think it is a backer plate with threads that has three spot welds holding it in place.
I have access to my Sedan Delivery where that goes in. I'll try to get a pic of it tomorrow and post it for you.
I don't remember either but this picture shows a square hole so I am thinking it has to be a caged nut.

GLR7533, Thanks for the pic. That answers it almost completely. Just not the caged part-but that is coming with all of the places I have asked someone is bound to know. Now I just need to finalize my solution.
That little rectangular hole takes a caged nut but is not welded in.
A caged nut is a square nut held in a spring steel cage. The cage is pressed into place and holds the nut. They come in different finishes. Here is a picture of one.
The last few posts are correct. Gaged nut as shown, not welded in. I think the spot welded /threaded plate Gary was talking about is for the hood bumper.
Do you still need me to take a pic?
Hugh, thanks but I have what I need now. Just have to figure out how to repair it.

Okay...if you change your mind let me know buddy. :006:
I thought for sure when I opened this thread, you were going to be asking about the unusual fender screw/bolt on the top of the area below the windshield that you can see when you open the door.
If this is the one you refer to, I think it's 5/16-24 that drops in and slides to the outside of cowl.
Restoration Specialties has them
I took a shot of the ones I took out, both broke. That is the correct thread for the bolt I posted
R.S. # for it is 9856 and is $4.80 each
This is from my 58 Ranch Wagon
Zumawagaon, that is the bolt I was looking for. Thank you I will order some for the future when I am sure I have to go back into that area.
