I'm starting sheet metal work and would like to know if anybody makes the front body to frame mounts.
The ones that are at the bottom of the firewall and connect to the frame. Looks like 3 pieces make up the bracket with the bottom part being spot welded to the toe board.
I'm thinking of separating the bottom part of it and using as a template to cut new ones
Has anyone done this?
Thanks
Here's another shot from underneath
your mounts still look very solid except for the rearmost part. I would most probably only cut away that rotted areas before the triangle cutout, not the full lower pieces. Those rear pieces will be very easy to make and butt weld to straight metal.
My Del Rio has the same problem areas.
BTW Did you have the body acid dipped ? It looks extremely clean !
Thanks for the suggestion on repair. I try to keep as much factory metal as possible but this also has some rust in between the pieces where all 3 connect. So I will dig in and see how bad it is.
Yes the body was dipped. Baked to remove everything first then put in a tank to clean it. Was done in North Carolina
I see your concerns about seam rust. you could still drill out the spot welds, clean and repair the og mounts and weld them back in. imho, I think there is not much rust in between those layers of front body mounts, because it gets oil from the engine compartment, and hardly any water or road salt. I guess there will be only light surface rust, because these mounts obviously were welded from bare metal parts.
The real rust problem really comes from inside, where the floorboard parts overlap and get rusted out from faulty fresh air drains... You already know that anyways...
That was really a huge step forward, having the body dipped.
After looking closer at it I will try just cutting off the bottom part and try to clean where the pieces mate up to each other
We'll see how it works out
I have a rotisserie on loan but without having a solid floor and brace it can't be used yet
