Post by: geraldchainsaw on 2025-06-24 09:32
hi all,    ok only a question,     right now I'm  having a hard time finding someone to adjust my mech lifters,  lots of noise when you step on the gas,  find at idle. don't know how long there going to last before I either need a new eng or whatever.   so mys question is,   arre there people that still rrework or have nos long block 312's,    or even put a 351w in, an I've gotten old so I'll be  looking for some one to be doing this work,   amny advise?,   thanks    jerry

Gary may know someone who can R & R it. A trade school shop might tackle it too.
There are machine shops that will rebuild the 312. I had mine done.

Gerald;  Get your books out, Y block valves are very easy to adjust, you can do it.  I do have a newly built 292 bored .060 over with Clay Smith cam sitting here with no place to go, but I'm in western Montana.

Gerry, noise when you step on the gas suggests too much timing advance, not valve adjustment.  It wouldn't hurt to get the valves adjusted anyways, it can't hurt.   John

to John, ,   the noise  when I hit the gas,  hasn't done it in the 15 years I've  owned it,  like I said 15 years, so the timimg, ran great until yesterday,   could be,  adjustmemnt,  probly could be adjusted,   IF I can find someone to do it,,   looked at the ford manual,  tells how to do it,  if I can't find someone to do it,  guess what,  thanks for the input,    I may have answered  everyone answer to my problem,     jerry

ok, update.     as Tom said,  its not that hard.   ok,   took left bank valve cover off,  checked #1 with feeler gage,  as it should be,  the rest  sounded good,      The noise I/ve been talking about sounds like its  coming from the timing  chain area,  put a broom handle to the ear an behind the water pump,  so,  after all the worring I'm  just going to let it go until something fails,   thanks for all the advise,  thanks guys

I have seen the occasional fuel pump make a knocking sound when something goes wrong inside. You may want to try your broom handle on the fuel pump. Or you can unbolt the fuel pump from the timing cover, and pull it back a bit, and see if the noise disappears.

thanks,  I'll ck out the fuel pump,  you never know

the oil dip stick is also in that area, possibly bent ?
could also be a bad generator or water pump bearing.

It is possible that timing changes within a second. I had a spring come loose in the centrifugal advance distributor, which cause early timing. It was easy to replace and I am still running the 1957 only ball bearing dual advance dizzy.

took the 57 for a ride today,    IT RUNS GREAT,    but,  put in garage an the noise is still there,  ck fuel pump,  runs like it should,  guess I'll just have to run it in the ground an change eng when it goes,  no one in my club knows why the noise,   don't know any one thats old enough to work on old engs,  godda b some one out there,

ok,  update.    the NOISE!!!!!!!!!!,     ok,  it wasn't the solid lifters,   an now its not the water pump,  its getting  costly trying to find out what the NOISE is,  ruins fine,  but that awful NOISE,   only thing left that IT MIGHT BE,  timing chain or in that area,  the guys that put the water pump in said ,it  could be a bolt some times comes loose,    i'll have that checked out later after I've saved up some of my allowance, in the mean time,  I'll drive it till it breaks down,  or what ever

Gerald, when was the last time you had the oil changed ? it could be a very cheap motor overhaul.

Y blocks are prone to running rich mixture. If there is too much gas in the combustion chambers it will leak down the cylinder walls and dilute the engine oil. thin oil will make the engine very loud, when hot.
The 292 in my CS is very tired and I have been working on it a lot lately. the timing gears ( cam to distributor, that is), will get so noisy, like a rattle snake. when cool with thick oil, no  noise at all.

fresh oil is always a good idea and  a cheap engine overhaul.
use good quality 20W50 with lots of zinc in it.

ook,  quess I'm not done.    changed water  pumps,  noise still there,  gave it a oil change,  to 20w50,  noise still there,  today I took off belt,  noise is gone,  all I hear are the sold lifters could it be the bearings in my gen?,  I guess i could just  stop worrying an wait till it stop running,  but thats not what we do,  little things bother us,  big things we can usually fix,  getting old don't help much either.     your probly getting tried of my 57 pictures,  so,  I'll change is  jerry

IF you took the belt off and the noise went away then it is one of three things: Gen, p/s, or A/C. Unless you are running a turbo/super charger as well. A bearing will be a higher pitched squeal. What you may be able to do is put a belt on just say the gen by itself. If the noise returns there is your culprit, if not then move to the next item.

if the gen bearing is bad, you should be able to feel when turning it over. Don't forget the belt certainly will put a some load on the crank and may even cause the crank to wander, like forward/backwards or compensate for some play in the bearings.
If you are using a modern replacement water pump. who's to say that no 2 of them can go bad the same way in a short time. Just saying. the old way of trouble shooting with 'new' parts doesn't always work these days.

Did you check the pulley offset on the water pump. I just replaced a w/p on a 292 and the w/p was a used one that came from a 55 T bird. the w/p hub and pulley were at least 1/4" out to the front and the belt was offset.

^x2 just visited my friends garage today with their 69.
when I was 18 I was going to tech school and there was a dealer with a black 69 FB in front of the lot. It gave me heart attacks every morning on my bus ride to school...haha
