Morning All. Recently with the high temperatures I had my 57 272 stall in slow moving traffic on a very hot day. After a short period of time I got it started only to stall again. Once out of the stop and go and on the highway it ran fine. Temp gage went from the normal 180 to 220 but it didn't boil over. I suspect vapor lock. I read there is some kind of an insulator plate that can be installed between the carb and intake manifold. Where can I locate this piece? Also is there a wrap for the fuel lines? Looking for ideas or solutions. Thanks
Carb spacer is a good idea, not sure about 272 2bl availability though. I am inclined that the ambient temps may be exposing a cooling issue, I wouldn't think a 272 should reach those coolant temps if everything is operating properly. I would check timing, radiator (for plugging), thermostat, water pump, etc.
I finally fixed the same issue by going to EFI. After that I corrected the overheating issue with a large clutch fan and a custom fan shroud. That may have fixed the problem in the first place. My car doesn't run over 190 even with the A/C now
I think all 57s used phonetic spacers originally. Solved my vapor locking problems by using only alcohol free premium fuel, alcohol boils at a lower temperature, expensive but worth it. Also as with all old cars one should have a back up electric pump. You can stack gaskets or I've even made spacers from bamboo cutting boards.
Check your distance fan to radiator spacing. Also maybe move to the 6 blade radiator.
Lastly check your exhaust manifolds. Make sure you don't crack one with the getting to 220.
I would say you might have a cooling issue. Also check the routing of your fuel line it's was updated.
Updated my fat fingers and this phone. Ugh
Hello Pat (suede57ford) has a lots of good advice concerning your problem. He is on several ford forums and lives in (HOT) Texas.
Hi All. Cooling problem located and solved. Very small almost undetectable leak at top left corner of rad facing grill. As to the vapor lock issue I noticed air bubbles in my see through fuel filter. Attached is a pic of line location. It's a new line I made to eliminate the previous one that was not good. I think the location is good. I think I have located a phenolic spacer. Any comments welcome. Thank you for all the input
Location is good. Don't like the filter! Had one on the 36, went to get underway to a car show, started it, pulled out of the garage and smelled fuel. The bowl had a dried out gasket (best I can figure) and had deposited a bunch of gas on the intake......I have a translucent one piece in line in it now. Not as pretty but works and I can see the gas with fear of a repeat.
I had the same issue also, twice. I also replaced mine with a translucent one as well.
