Title: Ford 460 valve seals
Post by: glenmichael on 2025-08-26 08:48
Hello ford fans, My 57 is smoking out the exhaust to the point of Embarrassment on start-up that I feel the need to replace the valve seals sooner than later!!! Looking online there seems to be a couple different ones to choose from. Has anyone out there replaced the valve seals on your 460 with succuss and which ones did you use?? It's a 1983 ford 460, As always Thanks for Sharing, Glen

Since I can't help, I'll just muddy up the waters and add to the confusion.  All my 460 heads are modified for Teflon or Vicron seals that require cutting the top of the valve guide pedestal.  I know there are DIY cutters available but I'm not sure the cutters will work with the valve still installed.  As a diagnostic step, I would just replace the OEM rubber seals with some fresh FelPro rubber seals.  If this slows or stops the startup smoke, you know you're on the right track.  With the springs off, do a good inspection of the valve guide for cracks or wear.

Thanks, gasman826, I ordered a new set of Spark Plugs, Fel-Pro valve cover gaskets and Fel-Pro valve seals # SS13364 ... Woody and I are going to the Car Show at the Adrain fairgrounds Friday the 5th, hopefully I don't smoke out too many people and towards the end of September we will be under the Hood... I could try to post some pictures if anybody is interested, Thanks again Gary.
