Title: Rubber floor coverings for 57's
Post by: E Code Randy on 2017-02-20 11:34
Guys,
I am in the process of finishing up the build on my custom 300  E code Oklahoima cop car. I would really like to install a set of original rubber floor coverings, front and back, but I do not know where to find originals or even repos. Does anyone know of a source for them ?? I would really appreciate any help I can get.
E Code Randy

The fronts are being reproduced, they are in the Mac's catalog, B7A-7013000. I suspect Dennis Carpenter is making these, not sure. The rears are not being reproduced, they are selling flat material.

Concours Parts has the front too (cheaper), search their site for that part number.

Here's a link to an Oklahoma City source....
http://www.classicautopartsonlinecatalog.com/app.php?BookCode=fsz15flx
opps...the link didn't go to the page...it's 273.
Are you in Oklahoma, or is that just where the car was from? I go to Oklahoma a lot.
Cool project...you'll be getting lots of querries on it I'm sure.

Guys : I am chirping in here because I am in the same boat. Looking everywhere for rubber matting that matches the front floor matting that I just received from Carpenter. Front is a real good fit but no help from Carpenter on matching rubber in any form to complete the rear floor and tray of my 70D business coupe. Carpenter`s tech guy said unless it was a part item with a part # there was no way that I could buy the material , even in unmoulded form. Has anyone been able to source this same rubber anywhere? I am prepared to try to mould my own , if I can find it. Help!!    Gary

Did you look at the "universal rear floor mat" rubber on the same page as the front mat in the classicautoparts link above?

Yes, but the front mat and the rear mat they offer are not as original. Carpenter`s front is as original. Somewhere someone must have the same pattern as Carpenter`s.   I just don`t understand why no rear mat is produced. If they have enough buyers to produce fronts, why not produce rears? Who restores half a car? Maybe I should do a wanted for an original rear mat. Any ideas.    Gary

I seem to remember the roadster guys over on the Hamb discussing where to buy rubber sheeting, and if I remember correctly the source that came up as having the biggest selection to chose from was McMaster Carr. Just a thought.

ACC Carpets might be able to help.  They offer vinyl floor coverings. They custom make carpet sets so they might do the same in vinyl.    Ray

it's a pitty that they don't make full rubber sets or I would never even think about carpet.
As far as I understand they make the front from old original patterns as obviously the whole unit is cast/moulded hot. They all have a multidimensional shape. I doubt that you could form a rear mat from flat stock in one piece without having to make several relief cuts for the stepped floors and footwells. I suppose there are no original rear patterns left. I have looked high and low for mats for years.

No one wants to make the rear Mold is the reason........and the originals have been lost to time I would imagine.

Gasman, Ranchero`s suffer the exact same problem as I have. Carpenters front rubber mat, as nice as it is, stops dead at the front seat bolts with no tails to go between the seat and sill. And like a Business coupe the Ranchero needs a small piece behind the seat does it not? In any case the solution would be for Carpenter to provide just the rubber by the foot and let us take it from there.

Thats what happens when a GM type business tries to run a Ford business. they have been going down hill ever since the take over.

Thanks for the help guys   ---- when I did my 70A E code years ago I was fortunate enough to find a rear floor covering that was new but an old replacement piece along with the same thing for the front. They had been boxed for all time so when we did the install, we had wrinkles galore. We used a hair dryer and got em to lay down some but they aren't real nice. I left them in the car in hopes they flatten some with the summer heat and maybe more hair dryer. This 300 E code is one I picked up from it's second owner 12 or more years ago out in Enid OK. It's cool as I found it's original factory build sheet in the drivers side door card. My 70A build sheet was in the passenger side door card where I find most the 57 build sheets I have found. It would be real cool if we could get someone to do the rubber floor covers as I would run them in all my E codes that had rubber originally.

I looked for a long time until I finally found a set of original NOS mats.  Being that they are 60 years old the rubber is very dry and cracks easily.  We really do need someone to make new ones.  If anybody has any experience with how to soften and preserve these please let me know.
