General Discussion / Re: items required for windshi...

Terry,
You'll also want some sealer to place between the glass and gasket and also in the groove in the gasket that goes to the body. Additionally, a long piece of 1/8th cord to lay into the gasket outer groove. Installation is not a complicated process, but it takes two people to lift the glass into place before pulling the cord to flip the gasket over the body flange.

'reverse thinking' the current situation, there may even come the time to think about the tops of the top of our wish lists of unobtaineum. as some cars may become available at affordable price sooner than later.
For me personally it'd be difficult to decide, because honestly there are not many, if any 'desperately desirable' cars on my wish list that I could think of.
If I had to name one, it would be a 1951 (only) Porsche sunroof 356, but unfortunately these cars are so expensive, even if they lost 3/4 of their value, I still wouldn't be able to afford one.... hahaha..... which is a good thing I guess. Some cars need to stay out of range, so we can keep on dreaming....

General Discussion / items required for windshield ...
Last post by terry_208 - Yesterday at 09:26
Exactly what items are required to install a windshield in a 57?

I know the glass, seal/gasket, and stainless but what else is required? Just a couple small screws, IIRC.

I ask because I got a quote of $982.58 for the glass and gasket and was told "all parts would need to be ordered in".  Another guy from the same company quoted me about $425 for the glass.  The quote for the glass isn't too bad for being local.  The $982 seems outrageous.   Auto City Classics list their windshield for $279 plus shipping.

TIA for your replies/thoughts.

Thanks guys; I just see the market for these getting less and less so I figured if I could get the right number, I'd let it go....

I like those Y block valve covers on the FE engine. Did it take a lot to
do it?
It certainly will keep them guessing.  HaHa.

57 and 58 Springs(front and rear leafs) are available from Eaton Spring.
They offer (for front coils) stock height and 1 and 2 inch lower or higher if you want. They also have the rubber cups needed for the spring tops.
Last I looked... it was about $300 for a set... shipping extra....
As for Front Spring rates....(because 57-58 Fords varied) that would be a phone call with them to discuss.

On my 57's for rear leaf packages.I used McVeigh's Spring...(I believe they are listed on our parts supplier page)
I bought the Police Package set up.. for both cars.. 6 leafs per side as Ford offered a 4 pack per side as standard.

At the time, McVeighs were about $275 for the rear leaf spring packages.... but it may have increased.
I bought the longer UBolts as well.

UPDATE: Based on the information from Ray Summitt in #5 above I did a search for vent window handles. Ray is spot on, the '57 Ford Vent window handles are the same as '58-'60 Thunderbird vent window handles. That's the good news........Finding a source is challenging. Concours did not have them. Larry's Thunderbird Parts did not have them. Obsolete in Oklahoma did not have them......BUT, I found a pair at Pat Wilson's Thunderbird Parts, in Newton N.J. 973-579-7205 His part number is B22917A for the Left, I believe the right side number ends in 16A $24.00 each. My impression from my conversation with Pat, is that he had a good inventory of these handles.

G
Come to think about it, on my 57 Custom, I had to take the front springs
out twice and cut them twice to get the height where it is now. It has been
about 10 years now and I am happy that everything is settled in.
The weather is getting warmer now, but we have had constant rain  just about all of April and I still have not been able to take the 57 out. J.
