I have heard that 58 steering box is quite an improvement over the 57 box. Is it also smaller like the 59 box? is it the same as the 59 box? I would like to replace mine, but room around the 460 and headers is critical.

I'm not sure about the size, but the '58, '59 boxes are basically the same. They are an improvement in that they are the recirculating ball type.

Try to get a complete column with wheel. The 57/58 steering wheels look identical, but the horn actuating mecanism is different.

You can use your '57 horn ring on the '58 wheel, but you should transfer the metal disk from the back of the '58 horn to the '57. You'll notice the '58 disk has a cut out on it that the '57 doesn't.

I just finished installiing a 58 on my 57. Much easier steering also the box has the motor side flattened out, more room toward the motor.

If you go with a '58 or '59, make sure you get the steering arm as well.

RC,I used a 59 box & colume but used my 57 wheel as it had a center horn button instead of a horn ring but now it won't go BEEP-BEEP??????

Smurf, that may be the problem. The '59, '59 use a different horn actuating setup, unless you wer able to switch everything from your '57 column. But If I remember, the '57 has a hollow steering shaft for the horn wire, and the '58, '59 doesn't.

You may have to go back to the '59 wheel, and use the '57 horn ring with the '59 back plate. if you do that don't forget the horn contact that slips into the '59 wheel.

RC,by horn contact do YOU mean the steel plug with the copper wire attached that drops down in the hole?,it will work with the wheel off using a screwdriver in the hole but not when I put the wheel back on-I want to use the round horn button instead of the horn ring cause it looks neat!

Yes, that's it. You can use the '57 horn button on the '59 steering wheel, but for the horn to work right you have to change the metal disk on the back. You also have to use that horn contact from the '59 wheel

In this auction there is a '58 horn ring. It shows a picture of the back, with the disk with the cut out section. The '57 ring doesn't have the cutout on the disc, since the horn actuated from the center, not the edge.

I have a low mileage 59' steering box if you have not found one yet. It has the steering arm too.
